Obituary of Ronald Sherk
SHERK, Ronald Charles of Port Colborne, Ontario, passed away peacefully, with family at his side, at Niagara Health, Port Colborne Site, on Oct. 13th, 2021, in his 90th year, after a life well lived. We love him and miss him already. Survived by his loving children, Kim (Joe) Gatt, Guy (Denise) Sherk. Also survived by Mary (Jim) Cosby and Cheryl Sherk, his grandchildren, Gord, Josh, Kara (Matthew), Matthew and Stacey (Steven) and his 9 great grandchildren, Hailie, Payton, Laila, Mia, Carson, Cadence, Colton, Calogero and Cohen. Survived by many nephews and nieces and cousins. He will be missed by his sister, Janet Sherk and sister-in-laws Jackie Sherk and Jane Sherk. His friend, Patty Langlais, and their dog Lucy, who was his “little honey” will also miss him dearly. Ron was predeceased by his wife, Betty (2012) sons, Scott (2017) Stewart (2018) Paul (2006) and Justin (1991) his parents, Howard Sherk (1983) and Lila Sherk (2013) and his brothers Evan Sherk (2020) and Glen Sherk (2021). Ron loved Port Colborne. He was the proud owner of Sherk Lumber Timber Mart, with Sherk Lumber being one of the longest family owned and operated Lumberyards in Canada, over 210 years and is the oldest running business in Port Colborne. The Sherk Family Heritage and Port Colborne’s History were passions of his. Oh, the awesome stories and memories he shared with us! His sense of humour and story telling will be missed. Over the years he was on the Board of Community Living Port Colborne Wainfleet, a member and a Past President of the Humberstone Lions Club, a member of the Port Colborne Historical Society and a member of the Lumber and Building Materials Association of Ontario. Ron attended Dewitt Carter, Port Colborne High School and McMaster in Hamilton and Ryerson in Toronto. In his youth, Ron enjoyed playing sports, especially hockey and football. At the age of 17, he started working with his Dad, at Howard Sherk’s coal business and also at the lumber side of the family business. He worked at Sherk Lumber for over 70 years, with an enthusiastic and unwavering work ethic. The family would like to thank Dr. Cranford, Dr. Yelamanchili, Dr. Scher and the staff at PC 2 West for their care and compassion. Cremation has taken place. The Sherk family will receive visitors at the DAVIDSON FUNERAL HOME, 135 Clarence Street, Port Colborne on Saturday, November 13, 2021, from 11:00 am to 1:00 p.m. A private family Celebration of Life will follow with interment at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery. Memorial donations, if so desired, may be made to the Port Colborne High School Justin Sherk Memorial Scholarship Fund or the Port Colborne Historical and Marine Museum, or charity of your choice.
