DesChamp, Roland Stephen Phelps Sr. – 88, It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our dear husband and father, Roland Stephen Phelps DesChamp Sr. on October 16, 2021 peacefully with family by his side at Roseway Hospital. Born January 17, 1933 in Shelburne, NS he was the son of the late William & Sarah DesChamp of Shelburne, NS. Roll was an entrepreneur and prided himself on hard work, being self taught and his passion for boatbuilding from the early age of 15. He was the owner of DesChamp & Jackson Boatbuilders Ltd. for over 55 years, recently retiring and selling his business. Roll was a member of the Nova Scotia Boat Builders Association until his retirement and was honored to receive a Life Time Achievement Award. He loved being surrounded by his family and friends for visits, celebrations, crib games, horseshoes and enjoyed many years in his hunting camp and hunting trips to NFLD every fall. He was very active in his community as a member of the Shelburne Volunteer Fire Department for 28 years and as a member of the Shelburne Town Council for 25 years as Councillor, Deputy Mayor and Acting Mayor. He was an avid sportsman enjoying baseball, hockey, bowling and golf. Roll spent endless hours in his vegetable gardens and workshop making beautiful furniture,cabinets and fulfilling any request from family, friends and community. He was very generous, loved to share stories, his passion for boatbuilding and his life’s journey.
Roll is survived by his loving wife, Blanche, children Jill (Tim) Firth, Halifax; Joyce (Anthony), Cape Island; Roland Jr (Trudy), Shelb; Jennifer, Shelb; Tracy (Barry) Eisener, Shelb/Lunenburg;Step Children, Judy (Frank) Herbert, Shelb; Sharon Garland,Bridgewater; Fred (Sue) Davis, Shelb; Marie (Brian) Guye,Halifax; Ernie (Melody) Davis, Clyde River; Karen Davis (Bill), Yarmouth; Charles (Althea) Davis, Shelb; Gary (Dianne) Davis, Port La Tour, Gina (Eddie) Perry, Ingomar
Grandchildren – Tonya, Shawn, Steven, Roland III, Charles, Peter, Ethan, Lisa, Katrina, Jessica, Jennifer, Twyla, Sandy, Trevor, Danielle, Freddie, Ryan, Tamitha, Heidi, Kenny, Brian, Ben, Chris, Tanya, Dawn, Gary Jr, Shawna, Jesse, Garrett, sister Diann Langley and many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, daughter Joy in infancy, brothers William DesChamp, Alexander DesChamp, Sisters; Gertrude Balkam, Deblois Jackson, Lillian DesChamp, Theresa Baker.
Arrangements are under the direction of H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Shelburne from where A visitation will take place on Friday October 22nd from 6-8 pm. Funeral Service will be held on Saturday October 23rd at 1:00 pm from the H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Shelburne Chapel with Reverend Doug Chard officiating. Private family interment will follow the service at Pine Grove Cemetery, Shelburne. As per the latest Covid-19 restrictions, proof of vaccination will be checked at the entrance for both the visitation and the funeral service and the wearing of mask is still in effect. Family Flowers only please. If you would like to make a donation in Roll’s name please honour the Shelburne Volunteer Fire Department or a charity of choice. The family would like to thank Dr. Ifesanya, Dr. Keeler and the nursing staff at Roseway Hospital for all of their care and compassion during this time.
