Robert Jay “Bob” Lever
1948-2021
Robert Jay “Bob” Lever – 72, of Port
Williams, NS, passed away February 6, 2021, in Valley Regional
Hospital. Born in Halifax, NS, March 4, 1948, he was the son
of Georgina (Gormley) Lever, and the late Wilfred J. Lever.
He attended Prince Andrew High School and was a proud recipient of the
Governor General’s Award for academic performance in his
graduating year. He went on to attend Saint Mary’s
University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in
Mathematics/Chemistry. Before and during his time at Saint
Mary’s he also served in the Canadian Armed Forces in the
Primary Reserve with The Princess Louise Fusiliers light infantry
regiment. He advanced quickly and was honoured to be the
youngest commissioned officer (2Lt) in the regiment at the
time. After graduating university and completing his
military service, he put his chemistry degree to use working in the
pathology lab at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax.
In the mid to late 1970’s, he developed an interest in the
emerging market of personal computers and programming. He
had a keen sense when it came to business opportunities, and took a
chance opening the first “computer store” in Halifax
in 1979, aptly named “The Computer Place”.
Success was difficult; but only because he and the business were ahead
of the time. Struggling, he accepted a new opportunity to
work for what is now one of the largest computer companies in the
world, Hewlett-Packard (HP). In 1982, HP relocated him, with
his wife and two boys, to Moncton, NB, where he continued to work in a
sales and management role. In 1997, he and his wife Diane
relocated to Ohio, USA so he could pursue a new opportunity as an IT
Specialist focusing on logistics. In 2017 he retired and
returned home to Canada with his wife Diane, where they settled in
Port Williams, NS. In recent years, he enjoyed rounds of
golf with his brother, Rick, and also took up hobbies such as laser
engraving, woodworking, and 3D printing. He was also an
aspiring sailor, and even took an advanced navigation and sailing
course, with the dream of someday owning and sailing his own
yacht. He loved his wife Diane, his “high school
sweetheart”, more than anything, and last year celebrated an
amazing 50-year wedding anniversary with her. He loved his
sons dearly too and would gladly give the shirt off his back for
them. He will be missed dearly. He is survived by
his wife, Diane Ruth (Andrews), and children, Michael (Shauna),
Cambridge-Narrows, NB; and Timothy, Port Williams; grandchildren, Ava
and Elissa; mother, Georgina (Gormley); siblings, Richard, Dorinda,
Margo, and William; nephews and nieces, Marie, Nick, Kayla, Shane,
Jason, Daniel, Rebeccah, and Jessica. Predeceased by father,
Wilfred; and brothers David, and Leslie. Per his and the
family’s wishes there will be no public service or
visitation. Cremation has taken place and there will be a
private family service at a later date. Donations may be
made in memoriam to the SPCA, or a charity of your choosing.
