Death Notice
BAUMBACH, Robert John – Robert passed away peacefully on November 23, 2021 at University Hospital, London, Ontario, at the age of 76. He was predeceased by his parents John and Dorothy Baumbach, brother William, and his beloved wife of 50 years, Margaret (nee Elliott). Robert is survived by his brother Gary Baumbach, sisters-in-law Alma Hyslop, Judy House, Pat Montague, and several nieces and nephews.
Robert was born in London in 1945, and was a lifelong resident of this city. He attended Central Collegiate where he met Margaret, whom he married in 1969. In 1974 Robert (or “Bert” as he came to be known in the music world) was a founding member of one of Canada’s best-known bluegrass bands, the Dixie Flyers. In its heyday this group performed at local venues and festivals, produced albums, were guests on radio and television, and toured across the country. The Dixie Flyers were personally invited by bluegrass legend Bill Monroe to perform at the 1983 Bean Blossom Festival in Indiana, the first Canadians to be so honoured. In 2013 the Dixie Flyers were inductees of the London Music Hall of Fame.
Although no longer able to play the guitar in his final years due to the increasing ravages of dementia, Robert still enjoyed discussing his favourite subjects (vintage cars and music), and he could still sing!
The family would like to thank the staff of Kensington Village for their cheerful and compassionate care of Robert over the last four years.
Robert will be sadly missed by his family and many friends. In accordance with Robert’s wishes, there will be no service. Cremation has taken place. If desired, a donation in Robert’s memory to the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Robert Baumbach 2021..
