Obituary for
Richard James “Dick” Croft
Croft, Richard James – Age 78, Alton
You were the rock, protector and shelter of this family. Today you are gone but you left your guiding light for us to follow on the road ahead. Now it’s time for you to rest.
It is with great sorrow that our family announces the passing of Richard “Dick” James Croft on Wednesday, July 7, 2021 in the Lillian Fraser Hospital, Tatamagouche.
Dick was born on November 21, 1942 to now deceased parents, Ernest James Croft and Sadie Ona (Dart) Croft. He was the youngest of five children, Ethel (deceased), Shirley, Elizabeth “Betty” and Joseph.
He met and married his loving wife, Marilyn Elizabeth (Tanner) Croft as teenagers in 1961. This began a marriage that spanned 59 years and was an example of true love and commitment, until the sudden passing of Marilyn on October 3, 2020.
Shortly after marriage, the young couple moved to Ontario where they lived, worked and made lifelong friends. They also welcomed two daughters into the world.
Eventually, missing home, Dick moved his young family back to Nova Scotia in 1971. After working in the logging industry for a few years, he realized his dream of owning his own business, he opened Dick’s Shell. Working tirelessly for more than nineteen years, he built the business and again, made lifelong friends. His passion for anything with a motor was not only work but also play, leading to his involvement in car racing for many years as mechanic and sponsor.
Dick’s love of country and bluegrass music led him to be involved in the Bluegrass Society. He and Marilyn would enjoy festivals and were wonderful dancers.
Dick worked hard his entire life starting on the family farm, logging, at the service station and much more. Some might say he played even harder. He participated in hockey for many years, four wheeling, golf and ski trips as well as trips south, all while surrounded by good friends. Just when others were slowing down, he took up Karate and achieved a black belt in his 60’s!
He will be greatly missed by his extensive family of siblings, in-laws, nieces and nephews, far too numerous to mention.
There was no doubt that Dick’s children, Teri and Kelli; grandchildren, Meaghan, Cody and Abbey and great grandchildren, Landon, Sadie and Braelynn were his pride and joy. His absence leaves void in our hearts and lives.
In keeping with Dick’s wishes, a celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Diabetes Canada. Arrangements have been entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro, NS. Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.ColchesterCommunity.com
