ROACHE, Raymond Frank (July 17, 1942 – October 16, 2021)
Passed away at Roseway Hospital, surrounded by family, on Saturday, October 16, 2021 at the age of 79.
Born and raised in West Head, Raymond was the son of the late Mervin and Eleda (Oickle) Roache. Aside from four years in Lockeport, Raymond lived the rest of his life in West Head. He was known as the unofficial Mayor of West Head. Husband of Gail (Nickerson) Roache for 52 years. Father of Tina of Lake Echo and Donnie of Lower Sackville. Raymond’s pride and joy were his grandchildren Adrian Joel “AJ”, Tristan Arthur, Riley Matthew and Emily. Great-grandfather of Rhylan. Brother of Sherry (Isaac Harpell) and Linda. Brother-in-law of Francis (Cheryl) Nickerson.
Raymond left school at age 15 to help support his parents. He worked at National Sea Products for a few years and then fished with his father. When his father had to leave the fishery due to ill health, Raymond struck out on his own. He retired from the fishery in 2009.
Following retirement, Raymond and Gail enjoyed time spent travelling to the Bahamas, to Newfoundland, Florida and Myrtle Beach with friends Sandy and Jane, and to New York with friends Bob and Joanne.
Raymond attended the Lockeport Pentecostal Church where he played his guitar and sang. As well, he served on the Church Board and led the Youth Group. Raymond participated in many fundraisers for people in the community needing help with medical expenses.
Raymond was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis at the age of 60 and given just weeks or months to live. However, God still had work for Raymond to do and gave him another 19 years.
Arrangements are under the care of Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Lockeport. A Public Visitation will take place on Wednesday October 20th at the Lockeport Funeral Home from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm. Due to current Covid-19 restrictions proof of vaccine will be required as well as the wearing of mask. A private family funeral will take place on Thursday October 21st with interment in the Lockeport Cemetery.
As per Raymond’s request no flowers please, in lieu of flowers donations in his name can be made to the Gideon’s International Canada. The family would like to extend thanks to the following: Dr. Gillis, Tracey Smith and the palliative care team, VON’s & Dr. John Keeler and the staff at Roseway Hospital.
