Ramiro Baptista Nunes peacefully entered eternal rest on July 16th, 2021. He was born May 23rd, 1938, on the island of Corvo in the Azores. It was here on the island he met his wife Salomé and were married on November 27th, 1958. They welcomed their first child, Gil, in 1959 and Julie joined the family in 1961. In search of a better life for his family, Ramiro applied to immigrate to both Canada and Venezuela. When Canada sent an acceptance letter in 1963, Ramiro left the island with his wife, 2 children and one suitcase in tow.
When Dad first arrived in Canada, life was very hard, and work was scarce. He took any job he was able to find, his days were filled berry picking and landscaping before he found work at a Sawmill in Port Moody. He often told us that in the beginning, if he had the means, he would have taken us all back to Corvo. He then moved on to a job at the Sawmill in Queensborough, where he retired after 40 years of service.
He bought his first car in 1964, a used Plymouth Fury and his first and only home on 10th Ave in 1972. He spent many days in his backyard, aka his “Kingdom”. He was so proud of his fruit trees, vegetable garden and his grass. You could often find Dad in the evening out in the yard watering his grass.
Dad’s family was the most important thing in his life. He was so proud of his 2 children, 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren and of course the love of his life, Salomé. His Grandchildren share stories of their Avô, how he could make you laugh with his famous dry humor and had the best smile ever. He was a selfless, hardworking man and his calming presence made them feel safe and secure. This was especially important while he was teaching the three youngest grandkids how to drive.
Ramiro is survived by his wife of 63 years, Salomé, his children Gil (Tina) and Julie (Sergio) and brother Luis. Grandchildren, Kristina (Joe), Danny (Lindsay), Kelli (Mark), Brendan (Courtney), Ryan (Cassidy), and Meaghan (Rayn). Great Grandchildren, Zoe, Sergio Jr., Brayden, Abby, Erica, Wyatt, and Sadie. He was predeceased by his parents, Joaquin and Eliza, Brothers and Sisters, Edwina, Alise, Margarida, John, Daniel, and Grandson Joe Ramiro.
