Rainer Anselm Minzloff
Age 85, born in Berlin Germany. After a rich life Rainer passed away on April 27, 2021 at the Admiral long term care centre in Dartmouth NS. A chemical technologist with a passion for tinkering and the outdoors, Rainer emigrated to Canada in the late 50s, initially settling in Kingston Ont where he worked for CIL. It was in Kingston where he met Ann Bowers, his future bride, a relationship that grew in part on his love of food and her wonderful cooking. Work soon brought him to the province of Quebec with time at Shawinigan Chemicals and then Northern Electric. He first lived in Montreal, then Longueuil, and finally St Bruno. His outdoor pursuits led to being a founding member of the Montreal Field Naturalist Club and later of Nature Action in St Bruno. Rainer had a love of learning and of teaching. Always working on home repairs, he would bring his daughter Hannah along from an early age, showing her how to fix things and setting her up at the age of five with her own tools. Even in long term care he was able to put his knowledge and teaching to use. A caregiver mentioned not understanding chemistry for her nursing course. Despite his Lewy Body Dementia he was able to tutor her, helping her ace her next test. Rainer’s face was often thoughtful and reserved however, once he began to talk, his expression changed instantly into one of warmth and curiosity. Although he could be a fiery redhead, Rainer was such a lovely, gentle, intelligent, and at times mischievous man. His smile would light up a room. In 2008, with the birth of their granddaughter Sophie-Ann, Ann and Rainer moved to Dartmouth. He was a beloved figure in her life. Rainer is survived by his daughter Hannah Minzloff, son-in-law John Hillis and granddaughter Sophie-Ann Hillis along with brothers Oliver and Thomas Minzloff, brother in law Alexander Kessler, their families and many dear cousins, nephews, and nieces. A celebration of his life will be held when Covid restrictions allow. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Cole Harbour Heritage Farm Museum.
