Philip Murray

It is with sadness we announce Philip Robert Murray, passed away on Tuesday, July 13, 2021, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney.
He was born in North Sydney on July 5, 1935, the eldest child of Roy and Olive (Amey) Murray. He is survived by his son Alan and daughter-in-law Vickie Siscoe (Halifax); brothers Roy (Catherine) Murray, Thunder Bay, Gerald Murray (Marilyn Denny), Kentville, Roland (Janet) Murray, Dartmouth, and sisters Sheila (Ronald) Lyman, Apopka, Florida and Wanda (James) Davidson, North Sydney. He was predeceased by his wife Rebecca “Becky” Matheson. He resided most of his life in Sydney Mines, and in recent years in Ross Ferry.
Phil was a CPA (Chartered Professional Accountant), and following a number of years as manager of the North Sydney Marine Railway established his own accounting firm in North Sydney. Phil was active in the community, serving for 25 years as adjutant and later as commanding officer of 562 Cabot Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Cadets, during which time it became one of the top Air Cadet Squadrons in Canada, in fact winning the top award on three occasions. In addition, he was the treasurer of the Air Cadet League of Canada and served on the national board. He was also a life member of the Legion. Phil served on the board of Marine Atlantic, was treasurer of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney, treasurer and chairman of the Eastern Region Health Board, treasurer of the Sydney Airport Authority, and a board member of Sydney Steel Corporation.
A funeral service for Philip will be held 3 p.m. Saturday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney with Rev. Roland Murray officiating. Limited seating will be available for the funeral service, Covid-19 restrictions will be followed with the wearing of masks and social distancing. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
