Peter Hutcheson Shayler Saturday January 16th 2021

Mr. Peter Hutcheson Shayler, beloved husband of Mrs. Claire Shayler of Red Deer, Alberta, passed away peacefully, at the Red Deer Hospice on Saturday, January 16, 2021 at the age of 81 years. Peter was an incredible son, brother, husband, father, uncle and friend. We all have gained an amazing guardian angel. Our dad was the kindest, proud, sweetest, strongest, honest, mentor, respectable, compassionate, loving and caring person I have ever met. I feel so grateful and blessed and very honored he was my dad. All the great memories we shared together I will cherish and keep close to my heart forever. Peter was born on April 15, 1939 at Kelowna, British Columbia, to Charles and Agnes (nee Appleby) Shayler. The family moved to Victoria, British Columbia when he was three; where he attended Elementary and High School. He later continued his High School, when the family moved to Nelson, British Columbia, in 1954.Peter started his Diesel Apprenticeship in Nelson, with the CPR and finished in Calgary, Alberta, in the 1960’s. This experience cemented a life-long interest in all things mechanical; especially planes, trains and automobiles, and at least one motorcycle. After completing his Apprenticeship, Peter joined the Business World and excelled in Sales. In 1975, hejoined Consolidated Concrete. In 1981, a promotion moved the family to Lloydminster to manage Consolidated Concrete. In 1986, Peter managed Independent Transit Mix. From there, he moved over to Consolidated, as an Operations Manager. Then in 1995, he moved to Aggregates, until his retirement in 2001. Peter met the love of his life, Claire Murphy (Joey) from Blackfalds, Alberta, and they were married in 1966. Peter and Claire began their family life in Calgary, with the arrival of Donna in 1970 and Steven in 1971. When Peter retired, he and Claire moved to Salt Spring Island, British Columbia; where they built their dream house, on the side of a mountain, overlooking the Salish Sea. They then moved to Maple Bay-Duncan, British Columbia, to be a little closer to family, and Peter’s Corvette Club. Cooking, entertaining, music and travel were a big part of Peter and Claire’s life, and they visited many varied destinations, many of which would coincide with a NASCAR Race. When Claire began to succumb to Alzheimer’s, it was her fervent desire to be back home in Alberta. They made their last big move to Red Deer, in 2014. Peter devoted many years to Claire’s well-being and ensured that care would continue after he left. Throughout that time, Peter showed tremendous strength and stoicism; while battling his own many health issues, with the constant support of his much loved daughter, Donna. Peter’s daily journey was made ever so easier and happier with the companionship of his nephew, Sean Blair, whom the family can never thank enough. Peter will be greatly missed by his loving family and friends. Peter will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Claire, who is at Villa Marie, Red Deer; his daughter, Donna (Camil) Cloutier and his granddaughter, Madison of Westlock, Alberta and his son, Steven Shayler of Red Deer. He will also be sadly missed by hissister, Maureen Shayler of Cowichan Bay, British Columbiaand his nephew, D’Arcy (Andre) of Victoria, British Columbia; his sisters-in-law, June (Bert) Nolan, Marg Schell, Shauna (Dennis) Harrison; his brothers-in-law, Sheldon (Helen) Murphy, and Skip and Darlene Murphy;Helen Towe and Sharon (Jim) Towe, and Wendy (Ramon) Rockar, all of British Columbia; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and extended family in Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia, and his Club of “the good old boys” special friends. A Celebration of Peter’s Life will be held at a later date. The family would be pleased if you would listen to some of Willie’s Roadhouse (old Country) and pour a glass of Scotch and “Cheers to Peter in Heaven”. We feel truly blessed and grateful for the tremendous care and compassion we received from the Red Deer Hospice, at the end of Peter’s life journey.
