It is with profound sadness that the family of Paul Middleton announces his passing on September 21, 2021 at the age of 73. Paul is survived by his wife Sally (Sara) of 52 years, his son Chris, and his daughter Cindy (Clayton). Also leaving to mourn are his sister Anne (Jim) Allender of London, Bill (Charlotte) Middleton of Kanata, his precious grandsons Jackson & Jamison Dougall, along with many nieces and nephews.
Born in Toronto (Scarborough) in 1948 to the late Jean Middleton (Hedden) and Donald Middleton (both pre deceased). Paul proudly boasts the story of meeting his wife at a high school dance…and the rest is history. Paul and Sally started off their lives in Kingston where he attended Queens University. From there, they moved to Hamilton for his graduate studies at McMaster University. They then moved to London, where they lived for 25 years. Here, Paul worked proudly and tirelessly for the SEIU Local 220 (Service Employees International Union). This was his passion – fighting for employees and “doing what was right”. In later years, Paul and Sally moved onto Sault Ste Marie to continue his union work at SEIU Local 268, then later onto Brampton where he ended his career working for the Air Canada Pilots Association in Labour Relations. Even in retirement, Paul continued to consult, and put his many years of union work and expertise to good use.
During all these years of hard work, Paul and his family would take summer vacations “up North”. This is where their love for Temagami began. After many years of vacationing bliss, they went on to retire in Temagami 13 years ago. All those years of hard work finally paid off to own a piece of “paradise”. It was here that Paul’s passion to help others continued within the community. He volunteered his time with the Temagami Lions Club, the Temagami Food Bank, CALA, and TAFIP. He was also a Temagami Library Board Member, as well as the Board Chair for the Temagami Family Health Team. He even enjoyed a short run on Town Council! Paul felt pride in volunteering within Temagami, and in his last days spoke about how it felt good to help others and his community.
After suffering a stroke last month, Paul did his best to recover. But, this wasn’t the only obstacle to overcome. Sadly, and surprisingly, he also faced an all too brief battle with cancer. With his family by his side, Paul passed away peacefully at home in Temagami.
The family would like to thank Dr. Goddard and the Temagami Family Health Team, Care Partners, Temagami Ambulance service, and the North Bay Stroke Rehabilitation Unit for all your help taking the very best care of Paul/dad.
Cremation has taken place at Lakeview Crematorium, Haileybury. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Buffam Leveille Funeral Home 705-672-3122
For those who wish, donations can be made in Paul’s honour to the Temagami Food Bank, TAFIP (Temagami & Area Fish Improvement Program), the Canadian Cancer Society, or the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
