Obituary of Murray Gerard MCANDREWS
July 23, 1946 – Portage La Pairie, Manitoba
February 6, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Murray McAndrews of Calgary, AB on Saturday, February 6, 2021 at the age of 74.
Born in Portage La Prairie, the oldest of five children, Murray grew up in Eckville, AB. He was the ring leader of family mischief and, as the oldest, paved the way for his siblings. One of Murray’s first jobs was working at the Eckville Co-op with his father. This is where Murray’s work ethic was developed and possibly his love for all things business. He was a hard worker who held himself and others to a high ethical standard. Murray started his working years with the Loffland Brothers Company followed by many years at Calgary Co-op. After retirement, Murray became an invested stay at home dad, a man who made one too many bologna sandwiches and never enough peanut butter cookies (according to his girls), and a man who truly enjoyed all his time with his children whether it was driving in a snow storm to a hockey game or cruising on the lake in the summer. He was a man who embraced physical labor and often had a new home reno project to keep him busy around the house or garden. During this time he was known in his family as the “Human Forklift” or “The Mur-man”. Additionally, Murray was an avid story teller; he would never shy away from an educated and heated debate or a trip down memory lane. Throughout his life he worked hard and played harder, it was in this manner that he met some of the men from the Breakfast Club. Many of his friendships have lasted well over 50 years, going back to his football and hockey days. Murray had an excellent sense of humor and a contagious laugh which served him well when making new friends. He had a special place in his heart for the warmth and crystal blue waters of Huatulco, Mexico. Murray looked forward to beachside beers and fun in the sun with his wife of 35 years, Beverly. He was incredibly proud of all of his children and he would tell you so if given the chance.
Murray is survived by his wife Beverly, his son Sean (Amber), daughters, Jamie (Chris) & Jessica (Devin); grandchildren, Addison, Emma, Georgia, Everly & Emerson; sister Margaret (Don), brothers, Jerry (Sandy), and Stewart (Conny); and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Phillip, mother Maxine & father Wilfred McAndrews.
Murray will always be remembered for his genuine smile, his ability to hold a tune while whistling, and his hardy laugh.
A Private Family Service will be held. Anyone wishing to share messages of condolence may visit Murray’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your favorite charity.
In living memory of Murray McAndrews, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, CALGARY, AB T2E 2V6, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
