Murdock McKinnon
Murdock “Bud” Daniel McKinnon, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away on Thursday, May 27, 2021, at the age of 94 years.
Bud was born on November 26, 1926, in Dartmouth, NS. He married the love of his life Irene McKinnon on May 22, 1950, they had eight beautiful children.
Bud was like a fish in water, he always encouraged his children’s swimming abilities by gently pushing them off the dock. Back in the day when Bud said something was homemade, he made it, not store bought.
Bud was a proud, always in good standing Union Ironworker, a very skilled welder, one of the finest welders in his time, there wasn’t anything he couldn’t weld. When you hear the expression “patience is a virtue” Dad could’ve written the book about it, just ask anyone that took the time to listen to & work with him. He was mechanically inclined, there wasn’t a vehicle, motor or appliance that he couldn’t fix He meticulously took anything in need of repair apart, if he didn’t have the parts, he improvised and pretty soon he had everything purring like a kitten.
Bud always had time for all of his grandchildren, taking them fishing, camping, and hunting. He loved the outdoors, he was the happiest gardening, picking wild berries, hunting partridge and deer with Irene and Sheba by his side. He never stopped hunting wild game; even at the age of 90 he shot a moose, a proud moment for him and his family. He had a soft spot in his heart for the wild horses, he liked nothing better than to go for a drive up to the mountains to feed the horses, leaving them oats and salt blocks.
Bud was witty and sharp, he successfully passed his driver’s test again at 94 years young. He absolutely loved the down east seafood, lobster was a delicacy for him. He loved coconut cream donuts, Bud always had a sweet tooth for Irene’s baking.
This is the first year that he won’t be berry picking but his legacy lives on as he shared his private picking spots with family only. He never did learn how to make jam, but he did make blueberry grunt.
His love for animals is displayed lovingly on the front of their headstone. Bud donated & supervised the building of a gazebo at the cemetery by his family; the gazebo is for all visitors to enjoy when they go to visit their loved ones. His sons under his excellent supervisory skills constructed and welded a stainless steel urn in the shape of a cross for both he and Irene to be buried in.
Bud will be sadly missed by his children: Grant (Angela), Dan (Sue), Lennaie (Rick), Jill (Randi), Randy (Sharon) Bradley, and Keith (Bev); daughter in-law Georgina; as well as numerous grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Bud was predeceased by his wife Mary Irene McKinnon; son Scot; daughter in-law Colleen; grandchildren Christopher and Erin; great-grandson Hunter; as well as siblings: Mary, Teresa, Bernie, Virginia, and Jean.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
