À la mémoire de
Michael Brebner
23 septembre 1940 –
17 décembre 2021
Michael (“Mike”) John Brebner, 81, passed away peacefully on December 17, 2021, in Mississauga Trillium Hospital, Ontario. He was born to parents Colin “Breb” and Margaret “Becky” Brebner on September 23, 1940, in Belleville, Ontario. Mike is survived by his beloved wife Margot Brebner (nee Lathrop) whom he married in 1967, son Daniel (Anna), daughter Rebecca (Joe), and his much-loved grandchildren, Eric, and Hugo. He is also survived by his sisters Pat and Sally (Jamie), and brother Peter (Vicki). Mike was predeceased by his brother Gord.
Mike graduated from Kirkland Lake Collegiate & Vocational Institute (KLCVI) in 1959. He delighted in his childhood in Kirkland Lake and his memories and friends from this time in his life were extremely important to him. He attended as many reunions and get-togethers as humanly possible! He started skiing as a young man, winning awards on the KLCVI men’s team, and was an avid and exceptionally graceful downhill skier all his life. He became a chartered accountant working for KPMG and then went on to start his own sporting goods company, Frikon, which he ran with his business partner and friend, Andy Copeland, for 25 years. Mike and Margot made yearly migrations to their cottage in Nova Scotia, a place he always felt truly at home. There he founded and hosted the annual “Davison Cup” — our family “Olympics” — a cherished tradition that will continue in his memory.
The most important thing to Mike was family and friends — his desire to communicate and connect, his loyalty, his sense of occasion, and his delight in gatherings of all kinds were his signatures. His eyes twinkled with humour. He will be profoundly missed.
A small, private memorial service will be held for Mike. A celebration of life (or two!) will follow in 2022 at a date to be determined.
