It is with much love and sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great grandfather on November 22, 2021 at the age of 75yrs.
John is survived by his loving wife Margaret of 53 years, his children; Martin, Peter (Michelle), John, Julie (George) and children chosen with love; Dylan, Justen, Ashten, Evan, and Teir. His twelve grandchildren; Mark, Jesse, Nathan, Kiara, Leilani, Kieran, Landon, Kohen, Kai, Paul, Ainsleigh and Nahla. His three great grandchildren; Gracie, Hayden and Storm. He also leaves behind his brother, Matthew and sister, Bernice. He was predeceased by his parents Francis and Cecilia and chosen daughter Serina.
John was born to Frank and Cecilia McKiernan in Tyldesley, England on April 20, 1946. He was an avid athlete who excelled at Swimming, Rugby, Cricket, and Soccer. He loved motorcycles and met Margaret while riding his Triumph Tiger Cub 200 in Tyldesley in 1962. They married in 1968 and after starting their family, moved to Saskatchewan in 1976 after John accepted a position at the Colonsay, SK. Potash Mine. Two years later, in 1978, they moved to Fort Saskatchewan, which has been home for the past 43 years.
John was a skilled heavy duty mechanic and his career took him throughout Canada as well as to Africa and the Middle East. After he retired, he continued to raise a family with Margaret and they travelled each summer to Parksville, BC, where he enjoyed the beach and nature and met many people. Each winter, John and Margaret would travel to Grand Cayman and spend time with Peter and his family where he became certified in scuba diving.
John was a quiet and kind man who didn’t hesitate to help others in their time of need. He offered his skills as a mechanic to whomever asked and he always enjoyed helping others. His favourite recreation was darts and he spent many years as a member of the Wednesday night league at the Fort Sask. Legion.
John met many people throughout life and he always enjoyed conversation about his beloved Manchester United soccer team. He was thrilled the year he received his personalized licence plate MANUTD1 as a family gift. He was one of their biggest supporters and a lifelong fan.
He was our rock and we will all miss him dearly.
An immediate family gathering will take place at 1pm November 26, 2021 at Serenity Funeral Service, 9914-103 Street, Fort Saskatchewan. At John’s request, cremation will follow thereafter. Donations in honour of John’s memory may be made to the Movember Foundation.
