Maynard William “Bill” Atkinson
1934-2021
Maynard William “Bill”
Atkinson, 87, of Riverview New Brunswick, formerly of Dawson
Settlement went to be with his Lord & Saviour on
October 24th, 2021. He passed away at the Veterans
Health Centre, Moncton, NB with his family by his
side.
Bill was born in
Yarmouth, NS on August 23rd, 1934, the son of
the late Maynard and Beatrice (White) Atkinson. Bill
Atkinson and Sandra Jonah were married in Dawson Settlement in the
Dawson Baptist Church on August 17th,
1957. They had three children, Peter born in Montreal in
1958, Cindy born in Iserlohn Germany in 1960 and Andrew born in
Montreal in 1965.
Bill Joined the Black Watch in 1952 in Aldershot ,NS and
deployed to Korea shortly after that. He was wounded in Korea and then
continued to serve as a member of the Canadian Forces for 25
years. Bill and his family were in Germany twice and also
served several postings in Canada. While in Germany they
travelled extensively around Europe with their caravan with Sandra as
the navigator. Sandra’s Mom, Mabel,
joined them in Germany for 18 months after her husband, John
Jonah passed away in 1975. She travelled with the family to
Holland, Switzerland, Austria, France and Spain. Germany was
a great family experience, and a focal point of that time was the
Salvation Army and the Protestant Chapel. Bill and Sandra
were very involved with both.
In 1977 on retirement from the Canadian Forces, they returned
from Germany and Bill and Sandra bought Hillsborough
Fashions. They ran Hillsborough Fashions Boutique for 17
years and were known for their customer service. The two of
them built a very successful business. They were very proud
when their daughter Cindy took an interest in the business and
purchased it. As they approached retirement, they
made a second home at a KOA Resort in St. Petersburg, Florida where
they volunteered at the Moody Bible Conference. Bill loved
the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, going to the beach and
travelling. He even tried his hand at golfing.
They went to the Dawson Settlement Baptist Church, Hillsborough
Baptist Church, where he served as Deacon, and the White Pine Baptist
church. Bill was also a Gideon and was very active with
their program. His faith was important to him and he would
profess his belief in God to all whom he made contact with.
His message was clear, trust in God in everything you do.
Bill was a true inspiration for all those who knew
him and he was a great father and mentor to his children.
Bill is now in the presence of his Lord and Saviour and receiving his
rewards.
Bill will be deeply missed by his wife, Sandra Atkinson;
sons, Peter Atkinson (Diana) of Ottawa; Andrew Atkinson of Dawson
Settlement; son-in-law Neal Hewitt of Toronto; his treasured grandson,
Mitchell (Claudia) and great granddaughter Kyla; brother, Leroy
Atkinson of Yarmouth, NS. He will also be missed by several
nieces and nephews and their dog, Jake.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his beloved
