Obituary
In Loving Memory
Mauri Samuel Kinnunen
1952 – 2021
Kinnunen, Mauri Samuel, 68, passed away following a short battle with cancer at Kelowna
General Hospital in the early hours of Thursday, October 28th, 2021 with family at his side.
Born in Finland, on November 14, 1952, son of late Lauri & Elma Kinnunen. Mauri is survived by his lovely wife of 34 years, Roxanne, of West Kelowna, BC. Loving father to daughter Leea Kinnunen (Cameron), of Whitby, ON; Sons, Nathan Kinnunen; Kyle Kinnunen (Suzie); Zack Kinnunen, all of West Kelowna, BC. Siblings, Ritva Ranger (James), of West Kelowna, BC; Pirkko Talkio (Jorma), of Chilliwack, BC; Aino Laamanen, of Lively, ON; Vilho “Willie” of Sudbury, ON; Keijo (Arylie), of Lindsay, ON; Esa (Brenda), of Huntsville, ON; Paavo (Lois), of Ashcroft, BC; and Paul (Marion), of Enderby, BC.
Mauri was a proud grandpa to grandchildren Mackenzie and Kassady, with a third grand-baby on the way.
Mauri leaves behind his in-laws, Hugo and “favourite mother-in-law” Marion Hickie, of Osoyoos, BC; Sisters in-law, Sharon (Derek) of Stony Plain, AB; Thankama “Affectionately known as Turkey” (Raul), of Spruce Grove, AB; and many nieces, nephews, close friends, and all those whose lives he touched.
Predeceased by his parents, Lauri and Elma; his brother, Toivo-John; his sister, Maija; twin-brother, Sauli; his brother David; and his father-in-law, Ramsey Wells.
Mauri was a husband, a father, a friend; an accomplished builder, teacher, worker, and explorer. He was a man of many talents with a willingness to serve others. He lived an impassioned life that touched many and was such a positive influence on the lives of those who knew him. Mauri loved big. He embodied the phrase “hard-work-pays”. He was a man of devoted faith, often sharing moments in prayer with friends, family, and strangers on the street.
The words-of-wisdom he lived by, and the principles important to him were apparent in the day-to-day way he lived life. Mauri went out of his way to brighten someone’s day, chat with a stranger or lend a hand. Mauri loved his wife endearingly and was a proud parent and grandparent. He often shared his joy and how much he loved his children and grandchildren with those he met.
His friendships were far reaching, crossing continents and spanning decades in time. Mauri liked to pick-up where things left off. His friendship meant you had more than just a friend. He was a shoulder to lean on, someone to call in a moment’s notice, a voice to help steer you in the right direction, or just someone to grab a bite with.
His boisterous spirit and lively energy will be missed. He had a life well-lived. His famous line ‘Sa’anyways (AKA so anyways) will be fondly remembered by many close to him. He loved and is loved. His memory will live on in the stories told and laughs shared. Mauri held a special place in the hearts and lives of people who knew him well. Gone far too soon, near and dear to many, a legacy left. Sleep easy and be at peace. We love you.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, November 7th at Emmanuel Church, 2600 Hebert Rd, West Kelowna, BC at 2:00pm. All are welcome to come share in remembering Mauri and celebrating his life. Masks required with safety protocols in place.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Kelowna’s Gospel Mission. Mauri had a love for community outreach and a soft spot in his heart for those in need of a helping hand. Donate at kelownagospelmission.ca.
