Mary Simpson
1939-2021
Mary Theresa “May” (MacDonald) Simpson passed away
on December 1, 2021 at the age of 82 after a lengthy battle
with COPD. Born in Sydney, Cape Breton, she lived most of her
life in Stellarton and later Trenton, Nova Scotia. She was a voracious
lover of bingo, crime shows, soap operas, cats, Pepsi, tea, listening
to the radio, word puzzles, road trips, breakfast sausages and
(unfortunately) cigarettes. Small in stature but larger than life,
Mary will forever be remembered by all who knew her for her loud,
tell-it-like-it is, no-nonsense personality, sardonic humor and zany
off-the-wall sayings. Her often tough and sometimes crass exterior
masked a caring and loving nature that was reserved for her family and
closest friends. She spun straw to gold whenever she could while
raising her four daughters with limited means. She was always
open to helping those who others would often look down on. An
unconventional woman, Mary was well ahead of her time with regards to
a lot of the societal changes that were happening during the mid to
late 20th century, including but not limited to issues surrounding
feminism and acceptance of the LGBTQ community.
She was predeceased by the love of her life, her husband,
Spencer Jack Simpson, originally of Gaspe, Quebec; her mother, Annie
MacDonald of Stellarton; brothers: David MacDonald, Agustus
“Gussie” MacDonald and Danny MacDonald, all of Stellarton.
She was also predeceased by her kindred spirit, her daughter, Cheryl
Lynn MacDonald of Trenton. She is survived by daughters: Rachael
MacDonald of Truro; Colleen Jobe of Toronto; and her baby, Elizabeth
“Faye” MacDonald of Ottawa. She is also survived by many
grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews including,
Michael Spencer MacDonald, her oldest grandchild whom she helped raise
from a young age.
Due to being a lifelong sufferer of severe claustrophobia and
in accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place and a private
family gathering will be held at a later date. Arrangements
are under the direction of R.H. Porter Funeral Home,
Trenton.
Run
on home Mary…Annie’s waiting.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Mary Simpson 19392021..
