After a long courageous battle with cancer, the fighter in her finally took a bow and let go. She went peacefully late evening of November the 14th. Mary leaves behind three children; Michael, Catherine Elizabeth (Betsy) and James; her grandchildren Rebecca, Christen, Sarah, Alex, James, Ashley and Hudson; great grandchildren Charlie, Carter and Wynter. Mary was predeceased by her husband John Douglas, and in February of this year by her husband, Aurel Caron whom she married in 2014 after meeting again nearly 6 decades later!
Mary lead a full and active life from early years as an accomplished speedskating champion to a “Masters Champion” in synchronized swimming in her “mature years”. She was active in the choir, played the piano and did love to sing (although we are not sure all that well, but she loved it!). She loved family history and study her own families from the McAteer’s to the Taylors and some off shoots from there. She has left behind a significant amount of history for us to read and view.
After many years in various cities, Mary choose Burlington as her home for the past 3 decades. She has contributed to the Burlington Baptist Church as a very active member, as well the Auxiliary at Joseph Brant Hospital and gathered many lifelong friendships in Burlington and beyond. They will all miss her greatly and her infectious charm.
The family is grateful to the doctors and staff at Joseph Brant Hospital for her, and Aurel’s care over the past 18 months. The family is also very grateful to Carpenter House hospice for the past few weeks for the care she received as she gave up her battle to win. No donations or flowers are needed. However, Mary would love it if anyone wished to contribute, please do so to the Carpenter House hospice or the Canadian Cancer Society. Thank you.

Death notice for the town of: , Province: Ontario
My condolences to all of Mary’s family… I was privileged to meet this gorgeous lady when she came to visit my family in Northern Ireland along with her sister Violet. My father Jim Melville ( full cousin) also visited Canada to met the McAteer side. Much love from Anne.
I have been trying to locate Mary for the last few years and am saddened to have finally located this obituary. I met Mary when she first moved to Toronto and we became fast friends. Mary was delightful, with a wicked sense of humour and a love of music. I relocated to the UK and Mary came to visit me twice over the years. We also visited Mary many times over the years at her home in Burlington. Mary will be sadly missed by myself, my sisiter Sarah and my nieces Clara and Hannah who were both enchanted with my glamourous friend.
Rest in peace Mary, I miss you.
