HUGHES, Mary Elizabeth “Betty” – Age
88, of Wolfville, NS, dearly beloved mother, grandmother, and
great-grandmother, passed away peacefully while surrounded by loved
ones, December 6, 2021, at the Valley Regional Hospital in Kentville,
NS. She will be dearly missed. Born in Liverpool, NS on April 22,
1933, she was the daughter of Jean Murphy (née Whynot) and
Charles Murphy, Mayor of Liverpool. She graduated from the Royal
Victoria Hospital in Montreal in 1954 as a Registered Nurse and met
her future husband Walter (Wally) Hughes while studying
there.
She travelled and lived extensively, from
Liverpool to Montreal to Florida where she raised her young family
before returning to Canada to live in Halifax and eventually
Wolfville. It was here that she worked for many years “on the
front lines” as an ER nurse at the Eastern Kings Memorial
Hospital. She will be remembered for the many things that she loved
and shared, including her love of bridge, golf, and aerobics, all of
which she enjoyed with tireless energy well into her later years. She
also enjoyed an extreme form of gardening known as “farming”
– climbing 20-foot ladders to pick apples out of the tallest
trees. She had impeccable sewing skills and used them to celebrate
every occasion – from making baby quilts to prom dresses to
bridesmaids’ gowns and wedding dresses too. Even the living room
curtains were eventually turned into dresses. She was, after all, a
thrifty woman, a “Murphy to the end”. She had a
wry sense of humour and always enjoyed a
laugh.
She is survived by her children, Kim (John)
Tait, Guelph; Mark (Betty) Hughes, Wolfville; Leslee (John) MacKenzie,
Truro; and Nancy (David) Hughes-O’Higgins, Montreal;
grandchildren, Kayleigh and Breanne Tait, Nathan, Laurie-Anne and
Matthew Hughes, Quinn, Kate and Erin MacKenzie, Lily and Jasper
Hughes-O’Higgins; great-grandchildren, Henry, Clare and
Charlie; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. She is
predeceased by her husband, Walter K. Hughes, as well as her parents
and siblings, including brothers, Reid and Bill and sister,
Ruth.
A celebration of Betty’s life will be
held at White Family Funeral Home at a later date. In lieu of flowers,
donations in memory may be made to Bonny Lea Farm in Chester or the
Valley Regional Hospital. In accordance
with the Nova Scotia Proof of Full Vaccination Policy, proof of full
vaccination will be required to attend visitations, services and
receptions held in or by the White Family Funeral
Home.On-line condolences and inquiries
