SYRENNE, Martha
Marthe Blanche Syrenne (nee Lepage) was born on a farm near St. Denis, on January 12, 1934. Martha passed away on April 14, 2021 at St. Mary’s Villa in Humboldt. She was predeceased by her parents Delphis and Antoinette (nee Belanger) Lepage; husband Horace Syrenne; siblings Laurent (Therese) Lepage, Annette (Leo) Hamoline, Marie-Ange (Jean) Hamoline, Wilfrid (Germaine) Lepage, Pierre (Edna) Lepage. She is survived by her daughter Nicole (Joe) Hopfauf, son Edmond (Stacey) Syrenne; grandchildren Dana Hopfauf, Erik Hopfauf and Mason Syrenne; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She completed Grade 11 in Vonda. She entered the convent to see if she had a calling to religious life. She left the convent and enrolled in nursing school. Despite her high marks in nursing courses she did not believe that she would make a good nurse and left to pursue other interests. Martha still had a desire to help people and to do good works, so she became a lay missionary. She worked as a lay missionary for 7 years. Afterwards, she worked as a commercial cook at St. Ann’s Senior Citizen’s Village and looked after her elderly parents. She also frequently helped her brothers and sisters by taking care of nieces and nephews when tragedy struck, or they just needed some help.
She met Horace Syrenne in 1972 and they married in 1973. They farmed in Pleasantdale where they had Nicole and Edmond. In 1982 they left the farm and moved to Quill Lake. Horace passed away in 1990 and Martha raised the children by herself. She moved to Vonda in 1995 to be close to her sisters Annette and Marie-Ange.
How does one measure a life? By the passage of time, accomplishments, or material possessions? Martha believed it was through faith in God, and service to others. She believed that being kind and helping others is the correct path to living a good life. She had a deep faith and was a devout catholic. She believed in thinking of others before yourself.
She was an avid gardener and had a green thumb. She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting, the things she made were usually given away to others.
Martha often said that, “The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matthew 26:41) This is a call to do the right thing even when it is hard. Martha quite often did the right thing even when it was hard. She gave money to the less fortunate even when she didn’t have much. She gave food, clothes and her time to people in need. She was strong in her faith and she was at her best when things were at their worst.
Martha was not always able to live out her faith the way she wanted to, but she tried to live out her beliefs and asked for forgiveness when she failed. That is all God expects of us, for his mercy shall have no end.
