Marilyn Huber
November 11, 1938 – September 24, 2021
Marilyn completed her journey on September 24th in Halifax. Born November 11th, 1938, in Glace Bay, just prior to the second world war, she initially saw little of her Dad, Earl V. MacInnis. He was serving in the Canadian army, and whom she described to her mother Mary (Bowman) as the man in the brown suit. Marilyn credits both of her parents (deceased) for a fine upbringing and exposure to educational opportunities and the arts, both of which defined her life. After graduation from St. Anne’s High School she acquired degrees from Mount St.Vincent, the University of Toronto and Acadia. Dalhousie conferred her Ph.D for research in music education. Although she had a long list of letters after her name, Marilyn was most proud of the initials that her friends and professional associates bestowed -CPI- chronically politically incorrect. She loved a good debate and over the years was politically active on issues related to women and any perceived threat to our democratic freedoms. Professionally she will be remembered for her love of choral music and particularly children’s choirs. As well as conducting them she composed, arranged and published repertoire over thirty years as a music educator in Kings county and Winnipeg. She developed and conducted the combined elementary student and adult Greenwood Chamber Singers. During the course of her professional career Marilyn gave time to the Kings County and Nova Scotia music Educators Associations, the Nova Scotia Teachers Union, the Manitoba Teachers Society, the Nova Scotia Department of Education, the Nova Scotia Choral Federation, and the music department of Acadia University. Active in her communities Marilyn was an organist and choral director at churches in Berwick and Greenwood. She was a piano accompanist for several groups including the Middleton choral society and West Kings High School. At various times she sang with the Middleton Choral Society, St.Pauls singers and the Dalhousie Chorale. In retirement she volunteered at the Prospect Road school, was a member of the provincial Johnstone Scholarship committee, and advocate for the Nova Scotia Speech and Hearing clinics. Marilyn loved, and was proud of her family, and she always told her friends how lucky she had been to have her surviving son Brent, his spouse Jennifer and her three grandchildren Maeve, Maren and Beckett so close to her. She is survived as well by her older brother Earl MacInnis (Darryl) Belwood, Ontario; sister Judy Macinnis, Halifax and brother Brian MacInnis (Karen) Dartmouth. She was predeceased by her husband Lorne. Cremation has taken place (Dartmouth Funeral Home) and Marilyn has requested that there be no service in memory but invites those who may wish to celebrate her life, to attend a reception at Brightwood Golf and Country Club in Dartmouth on Sunday, November 7th at 2 pm. Donations in memory can please be made to the Lorne C Huber Memorial award, c/o the Development Office, Dalhousie University, B3H3J5.
