Marie Lizette Alice Kanasevich (Robichaud)
We are saddened to announce the passing of our beloved Mom on Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at The Admiral Long Term Care facility in Dartmouth where she resided for the past 10 years. Born in Neguac, New Brunswick to Bernard and Helen Robichaud on November 29, 1925, Mom was the last and oldest surviving member of her immediate family. The war years were hard in the Acadian Village as in many other parts of the country so at 17 she moved to Saint John with her parents. She worked various jobs and met Dad at a dance in 1948. In February, 1949 they were married and settled here in Halifax. They lived here for a year when Dad retired from the Navy for the first time, then moved to Edmonton in 1950 where Dad’s Ukrainian family were settled. Mom had a special relationship with her mother in-law – our “Baba”- who taught her how to cook all the wonderful Ukrainian foods we were all raised on. After 9 years there with 4 kids, Dad decided he loved the ocean more than the Prairies, re-enlisted in the Navy and moved the family back to Halifax. Mom was happy to be back on the East Coast where all her Acadian close-knit family was.
Mom was a wonderful homemaker. She truly loved her family and her children were her whole life. She was known for her wonderful cooking. She fed everyone who ever walked through the doors and if she couldn’t feed you, you were going home with something from the pantry or the freezer. Mom along with Dad gardened and pickled, canned and froze pretty much everything they grew. From the family to neighbours, cousins in NB, her family doctor and anyone else she could share it with, went her jams and jellies.
Gardening was another passion of Mom’s. She loved anything that flowered, built up a beautiful showpiece of garden beds and liked to be outside all summer adding to or tweaking her beds.
Mom also loved to travel but truly never saw as much of the world as she would have liked. Mom and Dad went across Canada a number of times to visit family and friends spread across the country. They stayed friends for life with many people they met, corresponding usually by letter or phone back in the day.
As Mom got older, she developed dementia. Her personality changed and she forgot many things. But even as we were heartbroken by this nasty disease that slowly took her from us, our feisty outspoken Mom would
shine through at the oddest moments. If we didn’t laugh for all the funny things she did or said we’d have cried. She would have rather we laughed.
She is survived by sons, John and Wayne (Janice); daughters, Wendy and Gail; 11 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. She was predeceased by her husband, Maurice, son Dennis, four sisters and one brother. She will be forever in our hearts and memories.
Special thanks to all the staff and caregivers at The Admiral for Mom’s care over the years.
A private service will be held at a later date.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Marie Lizette Alice Kanasevich Robichaud November 29 1925 May 12 2021..
