Obituary
Marguerite Higgins
North Sydney
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beautiful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Marguerite (Chisholm) Higgins, age 94, on Tuesday December 14, 2021, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Sydney on August 31, 1927, Marguerite was the daughter of the late John and Kate (Ferguson) Chisholm. She was a proud “North-ender” and graduate of Holy Angels. Marguerite continued her studies at Sydney Business College and was later employed as an Accounting Clerk at the Co-Op office in Ashby.
In 1953, Marguerite married the love of her life, Art and settled into their forever home on Victoria Street in North Sydney. As a faithful parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church, Marguerite was a Minister of the Eucharist and Hospitality, a member of the Catholic Women’s League, and together with Art, was a dedicated volunteer with the St. Vincent de Paul Society. She also served with the North Sydney Food Bank and the Board of Health.
Family was most important to Marguerite and the love she had for hers was evident in the close relationships she had with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She believed one could never have enough Ingonish beach days, dancing or good cups of tea.
She is survived by her children Louise (Al) Côté, Moncton, Sean, Sydney, Kathleen (Shaun) MacDonald, North Sydney, Michael (Helen), Cole Harbour, Kerry (Gerri), Calgary; her grandchildren Carolynn (Bryan) Dubé, Marc Côté, Laura Higgins (Adam), Kieran Higgins (Saara), Kaitlin (Daniel) Thistle, Brèagh (Ryan) Cordy, Michael MacDonald (Lauren), Shannon MacDonald (Michael), Stephanie Higgins (Tim), Kathleen Higgins (Tyler), great-grandchildren Bren, Theo, Shea, Graeme, Neil, Lorne and Elvi, and many nieces and nephews.
Marguerite was predeceased by her loving husband Art in 2019, three sons Joseph, Gerard and John in infancy, her brothers Francis, Joseph and John Chisholm and sister Nora Brothers.
The family wishes to extend sincere appreciation to Dr. Giorno, Dr. Tan and the nurses of 4A at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their care and compassion.
A funeral mass for Marguerite will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 20th at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Angus MacDougall officiating. The funeral mass will be live-streamed on the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home Facebook page. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney. Covid-19 restrictions will be in place for the visitation and funeral mass with Proof of Vaccination, government photo ID, social distancing, the wearing of masks and limited seating in the church.
