Obituary
Margaret Steffenson passed away October 7, 2021 in West Kelowna only three days after the milestone of her 100th birthday. She was born October 4, 1921 on the Brigham farm near Naicam, Saskatchewan. The second daughter of Charles Brigham and Margaret (Dolly) Steven Brigham.
In the early 1920’s the Brigham family moved to a farm they owned south of Watson, Saskatchewan in an area known as the Sproule District. In 1926 Margaret and her mother took a train trip to Dundee, Quebec to visit Dolly’s family. Margaret spoke of this trip the rest of her life. Unfortunately, while there they received a telegram from Watson telling them to return home as Margaret’s 12-year-old brother, William, was very sick with meningitis. He died shortly after they returned home. The following year the Brigham family returned from Watson to the farm near Naicam.
Margaret and her older sister Muriel, and later also their younger sister Sibyl attended the nearby country school, Home School. Margaret spoke fondly of the teacher, Gladys Sparks, that she had for most of the years she attended school there. Miss Sparks very much was an influence that shaped Margaret’s future. In those years country schools did not teach high school to the end of grade twelve, so Margaret took the rest of her high school in the nearby town of Lac Vert, where she boarded with a family. Margaret decided to be a school teacher. After high school graduation she went to teacher’s college in Regina. Upon completion Margaret was posted to a country school near Kennedy, Saskatchewan. In 1943 she got a country school near Margo, Saskatchewan called Robertson. There she had a teacherage to live in, and soon her younger sister Sibyl came to live with her and take high school subjects by correspondence. So, Margaret was teaching her sister. As it was awkward taking the train home to Naicam with a change of trains in Watson, she looked for a school to teach that would be on the same train line. She then she made the move to a country school south of LeRoy, Saskatchewan called Spring Grove. Though the school didn’t actually exist at this time because the original school had burned down that year. A teacherage was quickly built and served as the school for a year until 1945. At first, she boarded at neighbours, and eventually she lived in the teacherage.
On July 19, 1947 Margaret married Erhardt (known as Hardy) Steffenson, who farmed in the Spring Grove District. Margaret quit teaching. She said she could make more money raising chickens! All four of their children were born in the LeRoy hospital. On May 1, 1963 the family moved to a new farm near Theodore, Saskatchewan. Life improved there with better farm buildings, better and more land, and an almost new house. It was good land producing very good crops most years. Come the mid 70’s Margaret and Hardy enjoyed having their two granddaughters come visit them.
From 1985 until 1996 Margaret and Hardy spent the winters at Weslaco, Texas. They very much enjoyed it there socializing with Hardy’s cousins and their old friends from LeRoy that all lived in the same trailer park. They also got to know a few local Hispanic residents.
In late 1996 they bought a house in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. By this time Hardy was suffering from Alzheimer’s, so their daughter Muriel moved in to help Margaret with him. Margaret enjoyed living on Circlebrooke Drive getting to know some of the neighbours, and conveniences city living provides.
In late 2009 Margaret and Muriel decided to move to Kelowna, BC because they had more family in BC than Saskatchewan. Margaret liked living in the new condo and soon made friends with some of the neighbours.
By December of 2018 it became necessary for Margaret to move into Brookhaven Care Centre in West Kelowna. There she enjoyed some of the activities. Especially bingo and the trivia questions. She was well cared for there until her death October 7, 2021. The staff had become very fond of her.
Margaret was a calm, quiet, kind, considerate, thoughtful person. Never complained about anything. Always putting everyone else before herself. She was welcoming and generous to visitors. Margaret was a good cook, and enjoyed working out in the garden. She loved to read favourite books and magazines, and especially the daily newspaper. And, loved Purdy’s and Lindt chocolates. Usually had them within reach of her easy chair. She liked to go for day drives, and loved to eat out. Margaret did some travelling. She was to all Canadian provinces except Newfoundland, and to several states in the USA. But, most important to her was her family and she considered it her greatest achievement raising four children.
Margaret was predeceased by her husband Hardy in 2004. Her parents Charles and Margaret (Steven) Brigham, brother William Brigham, sisters Sarah Christina Muriel Brigham, and Sibyl Jean and her husband Henry Redman. Parents-in-law Chris and Hulda Steffenson. Brother-in-laws Ernest Steffenson, Allan Steffenson, sister-in-law Lilly Steffenson Hanson and their spouses. And, son-in-law Michael Morgan.
Margaret is survived by daughter Muriel Steffenson (Kelowna, BC), sons Howard Steffenson and his little dog Baxter (Kelowna, BC), Robert Steffenson (Theodore, SK), Kenneth Steffenson (David Hosking) (Victoria, BC). Granddaughters Melanie Goodfellow (Sean) (Kelowna, BC), Korin Steffenson and her daughter Keanna (Calgary, AB). And step-granddaughter Julie Morgan and her family (Kelowna, BC).
Margaret’s urn will be interred at a later date joining her husband Hardy in the LeRoy Cemetery, LeRoy, Saskatchewan.
