Marcella Germain Demeulenaere 1940 2021

Marcella Germain Demeulenaere, was born in Belgium February
14th, 1940, immigrated to Canada with her family, (Norbert and
Margaretha VanDamme, twin sisters Georgette (Sussie) and Julie, both
deceased, brother Lucien, mom’s twin sister Lucienne and younger
brother Frank-deceased. She married in Ontario in the 50’s, had 3
children (Jeannie, Gail, Albert-deceased in infancy) and 1 chosen son
(Norman). They moved to PEI to farm tobacco. The marriage
failed. Mom was a modest person not wanting much. If she had
food to eat and roof over her head and of course her car she
was happy. Her drivers licenses was important to her and in later
years learned she had her husband at the time translate for her when
taking the test as she could not read or understand English very well
and story would have it that sometimes she gave the wrong answer and
it was translated into the correct one. Mom liked the quietness and
never minded being by herself. It was felt she liked pictures of loved
ones better than visits from us all. She was a loaner for
the most part except for her frequent visits to Tim’s where she met a
large number of people, both patrons and workers. She was an expert at
cleaning. She was an avid walker probably putting more miles
on her legs then the cars she owned. She was always in good health
despite the number of sweets she ate. Being from Belgium there was
little complaints from the children about the sweets she could make.
Mom was a great collector of store stamps starting with Barbie doll
cases for her 2 girls and later in life she collected enough stamps
for a complete dish set from the Save Easy, which we still
haven’t had a meal on, and her last venture at stamp
collecting was the Jamie Oliver knives from Sobey’s. Thanks to all who
helped her with the last venture. She had a good sense of humor and
used it in difficult times. When she had her leg amputated she asked
the surgeon the following day if she could have her leg back which
shocked the doctor and the rest of us and when it was explained it
couldn’t be put back on she said she knew that, she just wanted the
leg for a souvenir. A great laugh was had by all.
Over a year ago Mom was diagnosed with acute leukemia. Throughout
this time frame mom had a number of admissions to the
hospital to recover with infections and pneumonia always with one goal
in mind, making it home. She did a tremendous amount of battling to
achieve this goal. Mom fell out of going to church some time ago but
she had a lot of faith in people. In moms mind Dr. Magennis
was basically God. Whatever he suggested was the bible. He did prove
that a number of times in the last year with getting her well enough
to go home. A fall in August sent her back to hospital with a broken
hip. An undiagnosed blood clot in her leg saw her airlifted to Halifax
where it was determined the leg could not be saved and she chose to
have an amputation still determined to get home. When she was released
from Halifax back to Montague hospital she said that was the first
step to getting home. She firmly believed she would get through this,
even talking about getting a scooter to get around. With her numerous
complications she made it home, just not in the physical world. Mom
passed away at KCMH with her daughter by her side on August 28, 2021.
Thanks to Dr. Champion, Dr. Magennis, Dr.
Miller, Dr. MacDonald (Halifax), Dr. MacKinnon and all the other
physicians that attended to mom during their weekly shifts
during Covid at KCMH. Thanks also to all the nursing staff, LPN’s and
PCW’s who made mom comfortable in her final days.
Special thanks to Anna Nabuurs and her staff as well as
Joanne Chisholm and the EMS staff that kept mom comfortable while she
was at home.
Marcella is survived by her
children Jeannie McCabe (Glen), Gail Thaxter (Steve), Norman (Liz),
her grandchildren Owen, Lance (Laura) and Thomas McCabe, Kyle
Demeulenaere, Brent (Kim, Great granddaughter Liza), Landon and Alyssa
Thaxter.
At Moms request, no visitation.
