Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of David (Dave) Balabuch announce his sudden and tragic passing at Winnipegosis, Manitoba on Thursday, May 27th, 2021, at the age of 70 years.
David was born on October 8th, 1950 at the Dauphin General Hospital. After completing his formal education in Dauphin, he attended Red River College and received his Chef and Food Handling Certificate. After many years working as a Cook in the Dauphin General Hospital Dietary Kitchen, David ventured to Winnipeg to work as a Chef at the Round Table Steakhouse & Pub. Missing small town living, David returned to Dauphin and worked for a time in the grocery section of the Dauphin Co-op, followed by 30 years as a Letter Carrier for Canada Post. With his speedy feet and a commitment to doing his job well David quickly delivered his mail, much to the delight of many people on his route.
Growing up David (AKA Lolly), loved to play hockey. With his hockey bag thrown over his shoulder, hockey stick in his hand, he would walk to and from the DMCC Outdoor Rink to play his games. He also liked to play marbles, games of pool at Veal’s Pool Room, board games, bike riding, fishing and spent many hours outdoors with neighborhood friends.
David loved filling his time with friends, going to auction sales and thrift stores, fishing, and being outdoors with his animals. Never desiring material and fancy things, a simple life with his dogs and horses brought him much joy and happiness. So it was no surprise when he bought an acreage and moved to Sifton to raise and train his dogs and horses. His nieces and nephews have many fond memories of the times spent with Uncle David, riding his horses, going on horse and dog sleigh rides, and family visits.
There was no doubt in your mind where you stood with David with his strong opinions and sometimes a sharp tongue laced with a bit of humor. David was a loyal and trusting friend. With out hesitation he was always quick to help others in need. Although he was faced with many setbacks in life such as losing an eye in his teens, brain surgery for an aneurysm in his thirties, and cancer in his fifties and sixties, he accepted what came his way in a positive manner. “It is what It is “, he would say and move on to living his life to its fullest.
David is survived by his two brothers, one sister and their families: Reg (Sally), Linda (Terry), and Barry. He also leaves behind his best and long-time friend, Susie Campbell, her family, and his beloved Border Collies, Wizard and Piper. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Jeannie Balabuch.
Honoring David’s wishes cremation has taken place. A private graveside service will be held at a later date with interment at Riverside Cemetery.
The Family would like to thank the Winnipegosis Ambulance and First Responders, the Winnipegosis RCMP and Sneath Strilchuk Funeral Home for the care and compassion shown to David.
In lieu of flowers donations in memory of David may be made to the Dauphin Humane Society or a charity of your choice.
