Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our dad, uncle, and brother Lester (Les) A.L. Matt. He left much sooner than anyone expected on September 4, 2021. With family by his side, he passed away at peace and was given his heavenly wings.
Les loved his lifetime career of practicing law. He graduated with his BA from Vancouver’s UBC in 1963, he continued on to the University of Manitoba to complete his law degree in 1967, joined the Alberta Law Society in 1968, and then joined the bar in Yellowknife, NWT in 1980.
While in school he married a young bank teller in 1965, her name was Doris. They packed up and moved West to Calgary and in 1970 their first daughter Sabrina was born. Then in 1973, a Christmas gift arrived on December 18, their 2nd daughter Brandi.
Les had a love for his horses and a passion for riding in the mountain passes. Living in Springbank at the time, he and the family lived on the acreage for 20 years and Les lived out all facets of his personality. The one side of him on his acreage with his horses and the other side in his 3-piece suit dressed to impress 5 days a week in ‘corporate Calgary’. He did so until he was 77 years old (after practicing for 50 years!).
Eventually, he sold the horses and acreage, moved to Calgary for a more relaxed life, and took it easy after retiring from law. It wasn’t long before Les began experiencing the symptoms of Dementia. It is such an extremely difficult and frustrating disease that stole his life. Even worse than Dementia was the ‘brain infection’ he was diagnosed with. This ‘brain infection’ took him within 6 days with very odd side effects and took our Les quickly giving no one a chance to say goodbye.
Many reading this are aware of Les’ favorite spot to hang out with friends and a nice vodka-soda with coke for a splash of ‘color’. Les knew so many at the location – many came, many left, lots of stories, and mostly a time to visit and keep in touch. It was his place for at least 35 years! So, naturally, if we could ask Les where he would go for the very last time – to say goodbye to everyone from over the years; remember the fun, the bad, the nice, the mean – it would be here.
