Obituary for Katherine Ide
December 6, 1947 – September 17, 2021
On September 17, 2021, the Lord called His devout servant, Katherine Ide, home. In true fashion, she left the world as she had lived her life, feisty and full of strength, resilience, and determination. Born and raised in Hong Kong on December 6, 1947, and at the age of 16, Kathy was sent to Perth, Australia where she attended St. Brigid’s College, a Catholic boarding school established by the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy.
She would eventually find her way to Vancouver, British Columbia to attend the University of British Columbia, where she met Allan, with whom she would share 49 years of marriage. Kathy graduated from UBC with a BA in Sociology and a Diploma in Education. As someone who was passionate about helping children learn, she soon began what would ultimately become a 35-year teaching career. She spent most of her teaching years in the Surrey public school system, taking a brief period away to found her own preschool, Twinkle Stars Preschool. Her dedication to and love for teaching continued after she retired from the Surrey School Board. Kathy could still be found in the classroom where she worked at her son’s education company preparing children for the competitive admissions process to independent schools.
Full of life, Kathy had multiple hobbies and interests including ballroom dancing, golf, classical music, baking, and traveling. She was also very active at her church of 35+ years, St. Francis de Sales, where she led the children’s liturgy. She also adored animals! Her prized possession was the beloved family dog, Shiba.
Kathy will always be remembered for her immense capacity to genuinely care for people, her extraordinary level of resilience and her consistently vibrant spirit. After receiving the news that she had terminal cancer, and was told that she had about 3 months to live, within only 24 hours she processed the information and was extremely accepting of her fate. Kathy made the most of her remaining time and spent her last days singing and dancing with the hospice nurses, eating all of her favorite foods, and receiving as many foot massages as she could.
Kathy left this world knowing that she was deeply loved and will be very much missed by family, friends, colleagues, past students from all around the world.
