Obituary of John Smith
Of London, ON, formerly St. Thomas, passed away peacefully at Extendicare on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, in his 88th year. Beloved husband of the late Patricia “Pat” (née Brown) Smith (2013). Dearly loved father of John Smith (Robin), Brian Smith (Julie), all of St. Thomas, Tony Smith (Pennie) of Nanaimo, BC, and Jodi Taut (Don) of London. He was proud of his grandchildren, Jaime Ross (Ryan), Tyler Smith (Melanie), Kyle Smith, Hilary Smith, Sophia Smith (Corey Juck), Spencer Taut, and Kassandra Passmore, and his great grandchildren, Lukas, Isla, Hailey, Brody, Leah, Natalie, and Griffin. John is also fondly remembered by his siblings, in-laws, nieces, nephews and their families. Born in London, England, November 25, 1933, he was a son of the late John and Elizabeth (née Faulkner) Smith. John immigrated to Canada in 1957 and came directly to St. Thomas. He was a retired St. Thomas Psychiatric Hospital recreational instructor. While in London, England, he provided two years of national service with the Grenadier Guards. Several of his highlights included guard duty at Buckingham Palace and participating in the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in 1953. In his younger years, John was an accomplished boxer and soccer player. In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place, and private interment will be made in McArthur Cemetery, RR1, Southwold. A private family service to celebrate John’s life will be held at the Sifton Funeral Home, 118 Wellington St., St. Thomas (519-631-1160). As per the directive of the Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO), attendance numbers will be restricted and a properly worn mask or face covering is required. Memorial donations to the charity of one’s choice will be gratefully acknowledged.
