Obituary for Jessica Elizabeth Hume
It is with great sadness that the family of Jessica Elizabeth Hume announces her passing. Surrounded by her family, we said goodbye to our beautiful Mom, sister and grandmother, on June 3rd, 2021. She was 71.
Survived by her devoted partner, Denis Olivier, daughters Sarah, Alix, and Caitlin (Julian), as well as her grandchildren, Noah and Sam, Ben, and Henry, Sarah and Marin. Also survived by her mother, Patricia Dunk, brother Randy, and sister Patricia as well as their partners, Gail and Roger, and nieces and nephews, Ben, Nick, Abby, Jonathan, Emily and Susannah. Jessica is predeceased by her father, Alfred (Poppy), and daughter Marina. Her ex-husband David Hume remained a close friend to Jessica.
Jessica enjoyed excellent health for most of her life but fell ill suddenly after an adverse reaction to antibiotics causing acute liver failure. Her strength and determination shone as she battled for over a month to regain her strength and liver function but ultimately succumbed to her injuries at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hamilton.
Spending time with her family was central to Jessica’s life. She was like “one of the sisters” to her daughters. She loved connecting to give daily advice and ongoing camaraderie. She could always be counted on for being present in the lives of her loved ones and consistently offered her sensitivity and “joie de vivre” to all of life’s trials and celebrations. Her passion for hosting and her hospitality were incredible and enjoyed by friends, neighbours and of course her family. Her youthful energy, interest in people and love of learning were a few of Jessica’s characteristics we will always remember. Her laughter and fun-loving nature shaped deep friendships and loving bonds with so many that had the good fortune of spending time with her.
She will be remembered for her talents in the kitchen as she took pleasure in cooking, remembering everyone’s favourite meal, drink, and birthday cake. We will all miss conversations in the kitchen while watching her work joyfully, a glass of Sauvignon in hand. She raised the bar in pulling together large get-togethers all while maintaining her style and grace. She took pride in her indoor and outdoor surroundings and with Denis’ assistance, won Trillium awards in the Durand, her neighborhood which she loved. She took a keen interest in exercising and was pleased with the strength and fitness she worked hard to achieve. She was instrumental in caring for her mother, making regular trips to St. Catharines to run errands and share a meal with her. She shared mutual adoration with her French Bulldog, Lily, and was lucky to have Lily visit her in the hospital, right at the end.
Jessica had a 30-year career as a flight attendant with Wardair, Canadian, and Air Canada. She loved her job and was beloved by her colleagues. She worked tirelessly to create a welcoming, comfortable, and fun atmosphere for her passengers. Whether on an aircraft, or walking through an airport, and during adventurous layovers, she was a tireless and professional ambassador.
The family would like to thank the ICU staff at St Joseph’s Hospital for their loving care of Jessica and for their compassion toward the many members of the family who were by her side. We will be forever grateful for the support of the Mason family through this hard time.
In accordance with her wishes, Jessica’s private interment will take place in the coming days. The family is planning a celebration of her life later in the year when large gatherings are permissible.
In lieu of flowers, please make a toast to Jessica with a cocktail. Cheers!
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Jessica Elizabeth Hume March 5 1950 June 3 2021..
