On Thursday, June 10, 2021 in her 85th year. Predeceased by her beloved Paul (2014). Survived by her two daughters, Michele Crawford (Dave) and Melanie Mityas (Sherif) and three granddaughters , Amanda, Jade and Sienna. Irene is also survived by her sister Norma Southward and brothers Harry Malcolmson and Donald Malcolmson. Predeceased by her brother Gerald (Claire) and sister Jean Voskamp.
Irene and Paul were married in Hamilton 1959, and soon after moved to Grimsby as the Langs on Lorne Avenue, where the home remained filled with love and laughter for over 55 years. Christmas and summer pool parties were given yearly events. They loved the small town feel of Grimsby, it was home. They were also devout members of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, where for many years Irene was a eucharistic minister, while Paul ushered. In 2016, Irene moved to Lincoln Park residence in Grimsby and enjoyed the company of many new friends and faces, and had the help of a warm, caring staff to assist her.
Irene was a strong, quiet woman, who worked for many years in the offices of the Eaton’s company in Hamilton, for Shopper’s Drug Mart in Grimsby, and later, the Grimsby Travel House, booking “happy times” for locals going on vacation. It was important to Irene for her daughters to became strong women with good education and careers, and the opportunity to live the lives they wanted. She was quite happy to see that happen and carry on with her granddaughters. Irene had a special relationship with each and every person in her family, including siblings, nieces and nephews, birthday and Christmas cards always sent, letters handwritten, and fun, chatty, check in phone calls often made. No one was forgotten.
Irene had a few close friends in her life, Bob and Lenore Swan from Winona, Sandy and John George of Tonawanda, N.Y., and Helen Woodcroft of Bancroft, Marie and Frank Calzonetti of Burlington, also Marlen and Gary Bodden of Stoney Creek, they were close friends for well over 60+ years. Irene even kept in touch with a couple of her Cathedral High School chums and met them for lunch semi-annually. Irene wore her heart proudly, and with Covid, missed family and friend gatherings and her lunches out.
Irene and Paul loved to travel, quarterly trips to Chicago, Texas, annual trips to Florida, Las Vegas, occasional cruises, and the yearly week in Red Bay with nothing to do but relax, eat, sun and chat with old friends, or challenge others to a tennis match. This travel kept Irene’s heart young and her mind sharp, along with her crosswords, sudoku, and jeopardy or euchre games. “You are only as old as you feel”, was how she lived.
The family would like to thank several for their kindness, the Coopers for rides to church, the helpful staff at Lincoln Park, Para-med home healthcare, Linda Werkman, Seasons Retirement memory care, and the Juravinski Hospital for all the great care shown to mom.
