————————————————–
Idamay Dorothy Banick was born on April 3, 1924 on a farm near Radisson Saskatchewan. A tiny baby (apparently she was weighed against 2 pounds of butter and was found to be slightly heavier) she was placed for warmth in a shoe box on the wood stove’s open oven door. Mom always said that she was lucky to have been born in the spring because she would never have survived a cold winter.
This tiny baby grew into a woman with an indomitable spirit, a generous heart, a keen sense of humour, a gift for storytelling and an enormous love of family. Idamay lived and worked in both Ontario and Alberta. She loved the West but the East became her home.
Mom loved music and she loved to dance. In her 60s she took up square dancing which brought her much joy. She had a large circle of women friends who got together to play cards and celebrate their friendship with outings for lunch and a little wine.
Her grandchildren fondly remember her open door, unconditional love, and welcoming embrace. They loved her stories of childhood coupled with lessons on laughter, fair play and humour be it woven into a card game or while cheering on team Canada playing hockey.
And of course, how so many of us will fondly remember tea served in fine dish-ware so that all who stopped in for a visit knew that they were loved as royalty by the twinkle of the silver reflected from the sparkle in her eyes.
We love you. Thank you for your compassion and all the memories.
Idamay is survived by her children Marie Waman, Bernadette Hamilton and Arnold Banick and by her grandchildren Barbara (Stephanie) Hamilton, Daniel (Amanda Tschetters) Hamilton, Wayne (Cam) Banick and John Michael (Diana) Banick as well as her great grandchildren Willow Tschetters and Cedar Hamilton. Her youngest son Wayne Banick died at the age of 4 years from leukaemia.
She is also survived by her brother Francis “Frank” Murray and her brother and sister-in-law Lyle Murray and Joan Gray.
At 97 years of age mom had outlived most of her friends but she remained close to her cherished friend Maureen Terry.
She will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her many, many nieces and nephews both in Canada and in the USA.
She is predeceased by her parents Ida and Thomas Murray, her siblings and their spouses David and Catherine (Kay) Murray, Vincent and Frances Murray, Clarence (Kelly) and Denise Murray, Eva (Murray) and Leo Trendle and her sister-in-law Doreen Murray and her son-in-law Terrence (Terry) Hamilton.
We invite you to join us at a Visitation and/or the Funeral to say goodbye to Idamay. If you have a story, a memory or photo you would like to please do so on this website.
