Hazel Ida Marie Strain (nee Thesenvitz)
With great sadness the family of Hazel Strain announce her passing November 28, 2020 with family at her side. Hazel was born July 28, 1943 in Fort Frances Ontario to Carl and Muriel Thesenvitz, one of six children.
She attended nursing college and attained her Registered Nursing Assistant diploma in September 1961. She worked as a nurse in Toronto for several years prior to returning to Fort Frances where she practiced nursing at La Verendrye Hospital, the Fort Frances Clinic and Rainycrest Home for the aged from where she retired.
Hazel married Walter Strain March 26, 1966 and together they had three children. At the time of her passing Hazel had five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Hazel’s commitment to her family was unwavering. She enjoyed spending time with children and grandchildren on Rainy Lake and later on Caliper Lake and Lake of the Woods. She helped others along the way to ensure not only her children were cared for, but their friends as well. Hazel volunteered with the Special Olympics and committed time to assisting family and friends when the need arose.
Hazel was in her element at the kitchen table surrounded by family and friends while drinking multiple cups of coffee. Sounds of laughter and enthusiastic chatter filled the house when a gathering occurred. Kids were encouraged to join in and were surrounded by great role models and friends. The importance of family and friends was ingrained in us from a young age.
Hazel was predeceased by her parents Carl and Muriel, her husband Walter and her siblings Jeanne and Dayton, along with several family members. Hazel felt each loss deeply and would speak of those that went before her with great fondness.
Travelling became a pastime Hazel enjoyed later in life after Walter retired. They made several trips to Western Canada along with Hazel’s favorite place, Las Vegas. Hazel had a knack for emerging from a casino ahead almost every time.
Cremation has taken place and at this time there will be no service. A family gathering and internment will take place at a later date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Rainycrest Auxiliary Activation Department.
