Gwen (Sim) Stevens
Gwen passed away on May14 in Northwood Centre Halifax.
Born in Waltham Massachusetts on April 17, 1929 to an American mother and Canadian father- Manola(Starratt) Sim and Dale Sim, Gwen moved to West Gore as a toddler and spent her remaining years in Nova Scotia- mostly in Dartmouth.
Gwen saw some of the world but was always happiest at home. Her favourite place was in her garden which gave her much pride. Even during her years of declining health she persevered ,doing her gardening in small amounts each day. She was a voracious reader, great sewer, knitter and dabbler in crafts, player of cards and board games and lover of yard sales.
The oldest of 7 girls , she nurtured great relationships with them all and also socialized with a few dear friends.
Gwen’s kindness and pleasant nature were appreciated by family and friends alike. She faced life’s challenges with dignity and grace. She was intensely loyal and when it suited her could be very determined. Having a keen sense of humour, Gwen was able to elicit laughter from her caregivers even during some of her last days.
She now joins those who passed before her including her parents, husband Ellis “Jim” Stevens, son Mark Stevens, grandson Jeffrey Stevens, sisters Lorna(late Frank) Sanford, Marie Gaudet, and Alta(late Don) Scopie, brother-in-law Ben McKay, several nephews, nieces, cousins and in-laws.
Mourning her loss but celebrating her life are son David (Sandy) Stevens and daughter Donna Pyne Dartmouth, daughter-in-law Angela Stevens Eastern Passage, grandchildren: Denise Stevens ,Dartmouth, Joanna(Kareem)Budair ,Abu Dhabi UAE, Jennifer Pyne(Bill Carlson) London UK, Dr Justin Pyne(Jordyn Hauber), Edmonton, Chloe Stevens Halifax, Courtney Stevens, Christopher Stevens ,Eastern Passage.

Our family would like to express our deepest appreciation to all the caregivers at Northwood who helped her survive COVID ; who courageously came to work each day, sometimes getting sick themselves but carrying on. They were there ,not only to care for her, but to substitute for us when we could not come. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Special thanks to all the home care visitors who helped keep her in her home as long as possible and to Sherman Sparks who was a great help at her home and visited her at Northwood.
Due to COVID restrictions a strictly limited graveside service will occur with plans for a celebration of her life at a safer time in the future.
Donations in her memory may be made ,if desired ,to a charity of your choice or consider Northwood Halifax.
