Obituary
A good man passed away on Tuesday, May 11, 2021.
Great grandfather, grandfather, husband, father, son, brother, uncle and true friend — Gerald Hart (78) of Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, will be missed by all who had the opportunity to get to know the strong, proud man behind the crooked smile, sarcasm and wit.
Born in Sydney Mines, Gerald was a son of the late Charles and Blanche Hart and the loving husband of Mary Hart (nee MacDougall) for 43 years.
Like so many in Cape Breton, Gerald worked as a Coal Miner, spending long days underground at the Prince and Lingan Mines.
No matter the weather, Gerald was happiest outdoors. When he wasn’t in the garage with Larry, bowling or trying his luck at the casino with Mary, Gerald could be found chopping wood, gardening, fishing and hunting.
Gerald was blessed with 9 grandchildren: Matthew (Niki), Marc (Jenna), Amanda (Keith), Ben, Samantha (Justin), AJ, Sasha, Jay and Sahara; and 6 incredible great-grandchildren. His grandchildren, in particular, will be forever grateful for the many hunting, fishing and berry picking trips he took them on, and for the time he spent sharing his love of the outdoors with them.
He is survived by his and Mary’s two sons Joe (Nancy) Pardy and Patrick (Jan) MacDougall, and their special daughter Helen (John) Krilow. He is also survived by brother Larry and sisters Shirley, Linda, Mable (Alex) and Sandra (Jackie); and by Mary’s siblings Martin (Ernistine), Hughena (Edwin), Bill (Teresa) and Adrian. Gerald was predeceased by brothers, Roland, Raymond, Douglas, Alex, Wallace, Hugh and David; and sisters Madeline, Jean, Edna and Miriam, and his in-laws Sandy and Dorothy MacDougall.
While our hearts are heavy, today we celebrate his great life and find comfort that, up in heaven, he’s throwing a ball for Mandy, they’re on route to a card game with his friends and brothers and he’s watching over us.
A special thanks to the Cape Breton Cancer Centre, VON and the many doctors and nurses who supported Gerald throughout his 5 year battle with cancer.
True to form, there will be no visitation or service for the late Gerald Hart. The last thing he would have wanted was for us to make a big fuss about him.
