GIBBONS, George Alexander of Port Dover, passed away peacefully at Dover Cliffs LTC on Saturday, December 11, 2021 in his 86th year. Cherished husband of Shirley for more than 63 years. Loving father and father-in-law of Christine and Dean Vallis, Karen and Glen Wallace and George Gibbons/Sharie Edwards. Proud grandfather of Matthew Wallace (Ertha), Jason Wallace (Kelsey), Tyler Wallace (Holly), Quinn Gibbons, Graham Gibbons, Maisie Gibbons and Adam Vallis, great-grandfather of Evelyn Wallace. Dear brother and brother-in-law of Lois and Ken Porteous, David and Carol Gibbons, John and Marilyn Gibbons, Doug Mitchell, Janis and Alvin Robinson, Peter and Judy Porter, Bonnie McCrae, Linda and Mike Kates and Sherry and Rich Maxwell. Will be missed by his many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Horace and Lily Gibbons and parents-in-law Neil and Hazel Porter, sister-in-law Ann Mitchell, and brothers-in-law James Porter and Carl McCrae. George enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and had a great sense of humour. He always had a stack of books to read, whether it was a western or a historical novel. George was a hard-working man, with over 15 years in the trucking industry and over 33 years in the commercial fishing business. He started his trucking career delivering ice cream for Good Humour. A couple of years later, he became the proud owner of his own transport truck and trailers, hauling steel for Laidlaw and then ICL. In his 40’s, he made the decision to change careers and bought a fish tug with his friend, Claire Hammond. They named the business G & H Fisheries Ltd. and throughout those years, owned the fish tugs Eau Clipper, Donna Gay, Playfair and Aletha B. He was secretary-treasurer of the Eastern Lake Erie Trawlers Association for many years. After he retired, George and Shirley wintered in Bradenton, Florida as snowbirds for numerous years. The family would like to thank the staff at Dover Cliffs for his care and making him feel at home during his 4 years there as a resident. All services will remain private, a Celebration of Life will be announced in the spring when Covid-19 restrictions have been eased. Arrangements have been entrusted to Thompson Waters Funeral Home, Port Dover 519-583-1530. For those wishing donations to Parkinson Canada or NGH would be greatly appreciated.
