With profound sadness, we announce the passing of our loving and devoted husband, father, poppa and great grandfather on Saturday, May 29, 2021 in Edmonton, Alberta.
Henry George Thomas Giles was born September 14, 1944 in Red Deer, Alberta. In his early years his family moved and began farming in Carroll, Manitoba. George’s work ethic started here as he helped with many chores. It was also here where he learned about how to treat, love and care for animals. He dearly loved miniature dachshunds, cats and kittens. The family later moved to Brandon, Manitoba for George to attend high school.
His first job was helping his father with his milk route. At the age of 17 years old, George moved to Grande Prairie and got a job working at McGavin’s Bakery delivering bread for 8 months, then moved to Fort St. John and worked at Beaver Lumber.
George met his first wife, Shirley Hamilton while living in Fort St. John, BC and they had their daughter, Natalie. They moved to Red Deer and he started working for Halliburton.
He met his second wife, Elaine Donovan while working in Lloydminister for Halliburton. George’s time with Halliburton took him to Lloydminster, Whitecourt, High Level and to then to Fairview where he was the station manager. George and Elaine welcomed their first son, Tom, into the world when they lived in Whitecourt. They then moved to High Level where their second son, John was born. George was then transferred to Fairview where the family settled and raised their boys.
George then met his third wife, Jackie Gnam in Fairview where they were married in 2015. George had made his life long home in Fairview, AB where he resided until the time of his passing.
In 1978 George started oilfield consulting for Anderson Exploration, and started his first incorporated company. This job took him from the far north of the Artic to down under in Australia, and many places in between. His oilfield experience spanned 50 some years. His work ethic was impeccable, his oilfield knowledge was second to none and he treated everyone he met with respect.
In 1982 George fulfilled a childhood dream of achieving his pilot license. George was passionate for flying and was happiest when he was in the skies. He also enjoyed many adventures, motorcycling, fishing, stopping for pie, late night coffees, museums, history, checking out pawn shops and was a collector of all things big and small. He was often teased about having his own little Peavey Mart.
George’s loyalty to his family and friends was evident in the respect and love he received back. His eyes lit up whenever he spoke of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
It was George’s time to fly with the angels. We will always carry his memory in our hearts. We will all miss this wonderful man. He will be known for his gentle mannerism, his sweet smile, his quick wit, his knowledgeable advice and of course his sense of humor and his love for memes and jokes.
George was pre-deceased by his parents Mildred & Harry Giles, his first wife Shirley (Hamilton) Pomeroy, his second wife Elaine (Donovan) Giles and his sister Janet Giles.
George will be dearly missed by his beloved wife, Jackie Gnam; his children Natalie (Norm), Tom (Kim), and John, his step-children Jerri (Troy), Wendy (Shaun), Russell (Michelle) and Denny (Chantelle); his sister Julia (John); and his 6 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, 3 nephews and 11 step-grandchildren. As well as his former work peers, his DMI coffee drinkers, and his aviation, car and motorbike enthusiasts.
At this time no memorial service is scheduled. We will be having a celebration of George’s life at a future time.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to any aviation museum or animal rescue organization of your choice.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of George Giles September 14 1944 May 29 2021..
