February 28, 1935-August 8, 2021
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, Frederick Garland Short on August 8, 2021. Born to Edith and Garland Short, Fred was a proud Dartmouthian. Fred started his 50-year ship building career at the age of 15 with Halifax Shipyards. In 1965, Fred moved his young family to Marystown, Newfoundland where he continued with Marystown Shipbuilding until returning to Dartmouth in 1980 and finished his career as Operations Manager of Dartmouth Marine Slips. Fred loved woodworking in his spare time. Making sure each one of his grandchildren had something very special.
In later years, Fred enjoyed spending as much time as possible with his family, whether they were trips to Michigan to enjoy some apple pie with his son Don and enjoying friendly football revelry with Joan or to Marystown to enjoy reliving his past with Eric while relishing in Mary Lou’s home cooked meals, his Wednesday lunch dates with his daughter Nancy, or sitting in his daughter Louise’s backyard watching the boats go by while listening to Charlie Pride, or trips to Dairy Queen with his grandchildren because “the Boys wanted ice cream”. You never needed an alarm clock when he was around. Fred prided himself on being early for everything, whether they were doctor appointments, arriving at the airport 6 hours before his flight, or beating the priest to the church on Sunday, resulting in getting his own key. His stories are famous and we loved to hear them. Fred was a survivor. He lived through a car crash, a plane crash and worst of all, the loss of his wife Sheila.
Fred is survived by sons Donald (Joan), Eric (Mary Lou) and daughters Nancy (Earl) Jesso and Louise (Nathan) Short Ayer, his grandchildren, Cameron, Jessica, Erica, Richard, Joey, William, Erin, Brittany, Ian, Helena, Sam, and Theo, 12 great grandchildren (plus twins on the way), sister Pearl Kaulbach, brother Ed Short, and several nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his wife Sheila (McKenzie), parents Garland and Edith Short, in-laws Lyle and Olive McKenzie, granddaughter Kimberly, great grandson Elijah, and sister Winnie Lively. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of the Dartmouth General Hospital for their candour and compassion, allowing Fred to have the dignity at the end that he so deserved.
Visitation with the family will be held Friday August 13 from 6:00 – 8:00pm and Saturday August 14 from 2:00 – 5:00pm at Dartmouth Funeral Home. The funeral will be Monday August 16 at 2:00 pm at Saint John XXIII, Cole Harbour, and Inurnment will follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery Dartmouth.
