Grant, Evelyn Blanche (nee Burton) – October 21, 1933-October 30, 2021.
It is with profound sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of our selfless, beautiful, compassionate, vibrant, energetic and loving Wife, Mom, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother on Saturday, October 30, 2021 surrounded by the love of her family and God. It is impossible to express how much love Mom had for her family and how much love we have for Mom.
Mom devoted her entire life selflessly to our family and was the epitome of a Mother. She was brave and fearless against all of the tribulations she had to endure and she persevered for us. She loved her family unconditionally, accepting and proud of each one of us. She was an angel on Earth and will forever be deeply loved and cherished. Mom touched the hearts of so many, and in return, was loved by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Nobody was a stranger with Mom.
Growing up in the tiny fishing village of Pacquet, Newfoundland, Mom lived a childhood filled with love, faith, happiness and family. She told stories of her mother coming in the house telling everyone to get their coats and come outside to watch the Northern Lights dance in the winter’s night sky, or go out to simply watch an iceberg float by in the bay that was her backyard. Mom had fond childhood memories of a life filled with worshipping God and playing ‘church’ with her friends, Christmases where her Dad would go into the forest and chop down a tree that would then be adorned with homemade decorations that Mom and her sisters would make. She talked of how happy her childhood was and how she thought she had everything and wanted for nothing growing up in that tiny town. Mom carried her faith and memories in her heart as she started to make her way in the world. Mom became a nurse’s aide and worked in the hospitals of Springdale and Twillingate, fulfilling her never-ending compassion for others. In 1953, Mom made the courageous decision to leave her beloved Newfoundland and start a new life in Ontario. Imagine the wonder of leaving a little fishing village and ending up at Union Station, Toronto. My father met her at the station to begin their lives together. They were married in 1955 and began their family shortly after, bearing three children in Toronto, moving to Aurora for a short while, and finally settling in Kitchener, where they added 4 more children to the family. Mom’s entire life was devoted and dedicated to her family, God and helping others. She loved being a long-time volunteer at Sunnyside Home in Kitchener. Mom was a devout Christian from childhood and she lived her life wholly devoted to God. She was a founding member of Stanley Park Baptist Church and was an active member for over 60 years. Mom was proud to have been a Sunday School teacher there as well. She loved her church family and was always there for anyone who needed her. She never missed a Christmas Eve service and was so proud when her children attended with her. Mom and Dad took many vacations and always came back with many funny stories to share, but one of the great highlights of Mom’s life was her visit to Israel. This trip brought to life everything her faith taught her. She loved to reminisce often about that vacation. Mom treasured each of her many, many friendships. Mom had a smile for everyone, her laugh was contagious, and her sense of humour always present. Mom loved music and you could often hear her singing her favourite hymns. She was an incredible woman, devoted wife, loving and caring mother, wonderful friend, faithful Christian and beautiful inside and out. She led a good, pure life and raised her children to do the same. Mom was selfless to the end. How fortunate we are to have been blessed by Mom’s love. Our hearts are broken, but we take comfort that Mom is now with her parents, Sarah and Job Burton, her sisters Mildred and Edna, and her brothers Austin, Harry and Ray. Survived by her husband of 66 years, Clarence, children Lee Grant (Joanne), Bruce Grant (Nancy), Pauline Grant (Greg Dunbrook), Debbie Grant (David van Dijk), Ian Grant (Tina), Lissa Whitelaw (Rob), and Lori Grant (Jason Daly), grandchildren Tyler Grant (Tina), Dylan Grant (Evelyn), Shelby Emrich (Dave), Chloe Reinhardt (Shawn), Emily Minielly (Andrew), Sam Grant, Jacob Grant, Julia Daly, Hudson Daly, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mom was blessed by a remarkable medical team for many years and we thank them all for their compassionate care.
