Obituary
Ethel Eileen Langford passed away peacefully in Armstrong, British Columbia on Thursday July 8, 2021. Ethel was born November 15, 1930 in Minnedosa, Manitoba to Mary and Nathan Clarke. She was predeceased by Delmer, her husband of almost 61 years, infant daughter, Sandra, and her brother, Antony and her sister, Frances. Ethel and Delmer raised four children.
Ethel spent her early years in Churchill attending school as an infant – her mother, being a teacher, was substituting for a sick colleague and could only make it work by taking the baby to school with her. The first student finished the assignment was the one who played with the baby. What an incentive! She later lived on the family farm in Clanwilliam as well as in Dauphin.
After attending Normal School, Ethel worked as a teacher at the Turtle River School. As she boarded with the Matters’, a natural visitor was Hazel’s brother Del. Teaching came to an end & marriage was on the horizon. After marrying Del, they farmed in the Banks District in Dauphin and later in the Burrows District. In 1971, they moved to the Town of Dauphin and a couple of years later moved to the Eclipse District. When Del operated a heavy equipment business, Ethel worked behind the scenes delivering parts and meals and, as always, kept the home fires burning. After living in the Dauphin area for many years, Del and Ethel moved the family west to Calgary. Ethel worked for Calgary Stationers for several years before retiring. They lived in several small towns outside of Calgary. In 2013, they moved to Armstrong, BC.
Ethel was an avid baker and was known for her “great buns” and amazing pies. She enjoyed playing cards, puzzles, reading and knitting, but most of all the company of her family. Ethel led a full and rich life as a supportive wife, caring mother, dedicated grandmother/great grandmother and loving sister. She worked hard and was always willing to lend others a hand when they needed a babysitter or help moving, painting, laying sod or just about anything. After her hip replacement, the family threatened to tie her to the table as she was eager to return to gardening, laundry and cooking right after the surgery. She was not one to sit idle.
Ethel’s passing is mourned by her children Eileen (Yves), Gladys, Robert (Kim) and Karen, 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren with number 8 on the way as well as 3 step-grandchildren and 7 step-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Isobel and many nieces and nephews. However, they are comforted to know she is reunited with Del. If there are trucks in heaven, they are probably driving around in one right now – and it would be a GMC!
A service will be held at the Turtle River Cemetery on July 24, 2021, at 11:00 to celebrate the life of an amazing woman.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Pleasant Valley Manor for their care and compassion and to Dr. K. McLellan for her continued support.
If friends and family so desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial tributes can be made to the Turtle River Cemetery Fund, c/o Rural Municipality of Lakeshore, PO Box 40, Ochre River, MB R0L 1J0 or to Pleasant Valley Manor Care Home, 3800 Patten Drive, Armstrong, BC, V0E 1B2 or to a charity of your choice.
