Erwin R Duncan
1928-2021
“Well done, good and faithful servant … enter thou into the joy of thy lord.” Matthew 25:21
Erwin passed away, peacefully, at home on Saturday, January 23, 2021. Beloved husband for 70 years of the late Helen (Campbell). Loving father of Alan, Susan Crump (Paul Boland (late Allan Crump), Sharron (Tom Laplante), and the late Marilyn (Chris Vriend). Loved and respected grandfather of Dawn, Jason, Stephanie and Nathan Crump; Kerrilyn, Scott, Jennifer, Kimberly and Chad Vriend. Caring great-grandfather of Elisabeth, Andrea, Tristan, Christian; Leah, Emerson, Jocelynn, McKinley; Peter, Abbigayle, Elizabeth; Dustin, Mason; Nicholas; Cole and Kase.
Erwin was born just outside of Vernon, Ontario, at the Duncan farmhouse shortly before his identical twin brother, Edwin. The family moved into Vernon when the twins were three months old. Few people could tell the twins apart, known locally as “the buds” in their younger years and always as the “Duncan twins”. They went on to play hockey for Winchester High School, Winchester Juniors (1944-45) and for the Inkerman Rockets (1945-48). They travelled to London, England to play for the Harringay Racers (1948-49), also playing exhibition games in Sweden and Czechoslovakia. Upon returning to Canada, the twins played in Pembroke (1949-50), Smiths Falls (1950-52), Clinton, New York (1952-53) and Belleville (1954-55). Erwin was not only highly respected as a player but also in his coaching and management roles for several local hockey teams.
Erwin was devoted to his family, church, and community. He lived his whole life in Vernon, always returning home to his family and community after short times away for hockey or work. Erwin was raised to work hard and do things well – he only knew how to give it his all in everything he made and everything he did. He believed in always respecting other people, especially his elders, and to always lend a helping hand. He was an honest, hard-working, dependable man with strong morals and of strong faith.
Predeceased by his parents Isaac and Laura Duncan. Brother of Edwin (Norma), Karl (Nona), and Vivien (late Mancel Daly). Fondly remembered by nieces and nephews.
The family would appreciate donations in memory of Erwin being made to Dundas County Hospice, Box 278, Williamsburg, ON K0C 2H0; Winchester Baptist Church, 486 Main St. Winchester, ON K0C 2K0; the Heart Institute Foundation, 40 Ruskin St., Ottawa, ON K1Y 9Z9; or to a charity of your choice.
