Ernest Lawrence “Ernie” Hawboldt
1936-2021
Born in Upper Dyke, NS, in 1936, Ernie was the son of the
late Norris Wilson and Annie Evelyn (Sweet) Hawboldt. He joined the
Hudson Bay Co. Fur Trade Dept. in 1955 and moved to the North West
Territories. In May 1957, he resigned from the Company and joined the
Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Yellowknife. He took his retirement
as a Staff/Sergeant in May 1984. Following training, he was posted to
the Musical Ride and then to St. John’s, NL, in November 1958. While
in Newfoundland, he served at St. John’s, Millertown, Corner Brook,
Port Aux Basques and Grand Falls. During his time in St. John’s, he
received a Commanding Officers Commendation when, alone, he arrested a
dangerous armed man in Kelligrews, NL. He was transferred to
Saskatchewan in 1970 and served in Regina, Mossbank and Prince Albert
until his retirement. At the time of his retirement, he was the North
Section NCO for the Prince Albert Sub/Division. In 1984 he assumed the
position as Deputy Director of Pinegrove Female Correctional Centre.
He moved to the Prince Albert Male Correctional Centre in 1989 as a
Deputy Director. He retired from this position in 1994. He also
operated a grain farm in the Prince Albert area from 1980 to 1994. He
sold the farm in 1994 and moved to Port Williams, NS. Throughout his
life, he was very active in the Scouting Movement; President of Prince
Albert Minor Hockey; Police Hockey; curling; golf; recreational
organizations; President of the Cosmopolitan Club in Prince Albert;
Charter President of the RCMP Veterans Association, Prince Albert
Division; Life Member of the RCMP Veterans Association; President of
the Glooscap Curling Club, Kentville; an Elder, Clerk of Session,
Steward, church Treasurer, Superintendent of Sunday School and a
member of the church choir; member of the Kentville Gyro Club; and, an
avid Acadia University hockey fan. He was an active member of the
Berwick Heights Golf Course and the Island Green Golf Course. He spent
several very enjoyable years as Property Chair at Sherbrooke Lake Camp
and on the Camp Council. He enjoyed the lawn and garden work and
maintenance of their property. He leaves to mourn, his wife, Evelyn
(Cahill-Chase), five children, daughter, Dr. Kelly Anne Hawboldt, St.
John’s, NL; sons, Dr. Robert (Bob) Hawboldt and wife, Bette,
Saskatoon, SK; Warren Colin Chase and his wife, Isabella Parrish,
Kentville, NS; Thomas (Thom) Hawboldt and wife Dianne, North
Battleford, SK; Dr. John Hawboldt, St. John’s, NL; three
grandchildren, Sandy (Heather Uhl), Robyn (Darren Marinelli) and
Geoffrey Chase; great-grandchild, Maddox Marinelli; sisters, Faye
(Jack) Calder, Kentville; Pat (Brian) Morrison, Centreville;
sister-in-law Edith Hawboldt, Burlington, ON; brothers, Garnet, St.
Jean, PQ; Andrew (Genieve), Leduc, AB; Stephen (Sharon), Belle Isle,
NS; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Norris
and Annie Hawboldt, sisters, Claire, Kaye and Shirley; brothers, Jack,
Charlie and Laurie. Cremation has taken place and there will be no
visitation, by request. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and travel
restrictions, services will be held at a later date. Memorial
donations may be made St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church or the SPCA
– Kings Shelter. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to
the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
