Emma Harlow
1940-2021
HARLOW Emma Catherine- Age 81, Halifax, gently left us on May
23rd, holding the hand of her best friend and soul mate of 61 years.
Our hearts are full of gratitude for her unconditional love, grace and
compassion that she showered upon all of us during her lifetime. She
was deeply loved and will be sadly missed by her husband Leslie, son,
Michael (Alma), daughters, Michele (Perry) and Denise (Derrick),
grandchildren, Candice, Kaylee, Carlee, Holli, Brigitte, Nicholas,
Monica, Brooke, Jack, and great grandchildren, Wyatt, Ivey and Lucas.
She was predeceased by her parents Gordon and Ethel Stevens, sister
Frances, brothers, Fulton, Bernard, Arthur, Austin, Aubrey. Her
siblings Helen, Diane and Eric will feel the profound loss of their
sister whom they adored. She was a special sister-in-law and a
favourite aunt to many in our family. Emma’s gentle, kind
nature earned her the admiration of many people who felt privileged to
know her. She was a legendary “foodie” with skills that were
often called upon to help support community events and church suppers.
She had an eye for detail and could plan meals for hundreds in
attendance without breaking a sweat. Her culinary magic was most
appreciated by her family, especially her grandchildren. They loved
Nanny’s cooking and she knew the path to their hearts was
through their stomachs especially with her delicious dinner rolls.
Whether preparing special meals to celebrate family milestones or
bringing a dessert to a gathering, she earned high praises regardless
of what she served. She loved babies and with the arrival of each
grandchild and great-grandchild, her heart grew bigger. She would
often describe their achievements with a “bless his heart or God
love her.” Emma and Les shared a lifetime of travel and
adventures that included trips to many sunny destinations, touring
Europe and extensive travel throughout Canada. A highlight for her was
visiting Austria and standing in the glass gazebo that was showcased
in her favourite movie, The Sound of Music. She loved live theatre
especially musicals and enjoyed many shows at Neptune with her family.
Her adventures with Les included several fishing and hunting trips. On
one trip in particular, she was rewarded for her marksmanship with a
large moose, the first in the family. Emma would not allow cancer to
define her so she continued to beat the odds over and over again
without complaint and with grace, courage and optimism that amazed her
family and friends. Along the way she had earth angels who supported
her and gave her the lightness and strength to soar. Her spiritual
family at Hammonds Plains Baptist church, led by Shant Manual,
provided a constant presence and reminder that she was not alone on
her journey. A special thank you to all of our family and friends who
reached out with kind words and concern. We read every card to her
that you sent and shared the details of every telephone call that you
made. She appreciated your gestures and knew that she was in your
thoughts and prayers. Thanks to the Continuing Care Palliative Care
team and caregiver Bradley Eaglestone, who helped care for Emma with
dignity and respect until she entered Halifax Hospice. The kindness
and excellent care given to Emma by all of the staff at Hospice gave
us the unexpected gift of time to prepare for life without our gentle
rock. Our gratitude is immeasurable. Emma loved a good cup of tea
which could only be made better, with a fresh tea biscuit and
strawberry jam. May you think of her with fond memories the next time
you sip from a china cup. Memorial donations may be made to Halifax
Hospice. Cremation has taken place under the direction of R.A. Corkum
Funeral home with a Celebration of Life at a later date. On-line
condolences may be made by visiting www.corkumfuneralhome.ca
