Ellen “Joan” Woikin passed peacefully on Wednesday October 13, 2021 at Poplar Ridge Home in Trail BC after a long battle with Kidney Disease.
Joan was born on February 24, 1951 in Port Alberni BC and grew up on the family farm in Shutty Bench near Kaslo with her six siblings.
Joan met her husband Bill in Nelson BC beginning their 48-year marriage. They settled on the North Shore where they nurtured their family and lived happily for many years, until Bill’s passing in early 2020.
Joan liked to spend her time volunteering, often with the Special Olympics, or at the local hockey games. She was a member of the Nelson Legion along with Bill and Ryan. Joan and Bill enjoyed travelling to son Ryan’s Special Olympic meets and games As well, Joan liked to assist Bill with his Pure Gold radio program and encouraged his dream of being a country music star. You could say she was his Yoko Ono and would follow him anywhere.
She was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren and then share their adventures with her friends and family. She was a proud Mom and Grandma.
Joan is survived by her daughter Tricia, son in law Dwayne and her two favourite grandchildren Jack and Lily. Also missing Joan are her sister Sue, brothers Gary, Tim, and Alan, in laws Verna, Ken, Wanda and family as well as extended family.
Joan was predeceased by her husband Bill, son Ryan, brother in-law John, parents Marjorie & Cappy Jacura, and brothers Rick and Gerry.
A family service will take place in summer 2022 to remember and honour both Joan and Bill.
