Obituary of Elizabeth Scratch
SCRATCH, Elizabeth
May 13, 1925 – November 14, 2021
Elizabeth Rose Scratch (Nee Varga) passed away at Extendicare Tecumseh on Sunday November 14th, 2021 at age 96. Predeceased by her beloved husband Stanley (2012). Proud mother to Richard (Barbara), Gregory, Cynthia, Cheri (Willy) Lapain, Chris (Margriet), Merri Beth (Michel) Ouellette and Mark (Debbie).
Proud grandmother to 15 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
She is survived by sisters Helen and Jeanne, brothers Bill, Dan, Jim, Zoli and Ernie, and sister-in law Lenore Spern. Predeceased by brothers Robert, Andrew, Dave; sisters Rose and Irene and Granddaughter Samantha (1988).
Elizabeth Varga, daughter of Dezzo and Emerence Varga, was born in the village of Polgar, Hungary on May 13, 1925. Her family immigrated to Canada in 1929 and settled in Leamington, Ontario.
Stan and Betty had known each other from grade school days in Blytheswood and started dating just before Stan enlisted in the Navy in 1943.They were married in March of 1945 while he was on a two week leave. With the war ended they settled first in Leamington and in 1949 bought the house they would live in for over 65 years in Cottam, Ontario. While busy raising a family that grew to 7 children, they started a small business behind their house called EandS Quality products (later renamed Cottam Diecasting Ltd.). Over the next decades they acted as a team to keep the business growing through all the aches and pains. Stan’s calm demeanour in the face of difficulties combined with Betty’s sheer will and determination to succeed are qualities we have always admired. Mom raised 7 children, helped run a business, planted two acres in strawberries, raspberries and other cash crops, and sold them at the road side stand. Her energy was boundless. She never accepted limitations.
We would like to extend special thanks to the staff at Extendicare Tecumseh who did everything they could to help Mom during this extremely difficult Covid-19 period. It was excruciating – as so many know – to be unable to visit personally until nearly the end. Also thanks to the staff at Chartwell St.Clair Beach for the years Mom enjoyed there.
