Obituary for
Eleanor Hildegarde Kurbis
Eleanor Hildegarde Kurbis was a caring wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She left this world July 13, 2021 at the age of 76 years.
She was born to Ernest and Martha Lange on January 3, 1945. Her youthful years were spent on the farms in Newbrook and Thorhild. After graduating high school in Edmonton, Eleanor worked for AGT followed by the Department of Public Works as a stenographer. Shortly thereafter, she met her husband, Len Kurbis, and together they settled in Salmo, BC to grow their Motel & RV Park business. They operated their property for 45 years and while there, lovingly raised their children, Cheryl and Kris.
At the age of 42, Eleanor attended college and became an LPN. She passionately enjoyed this line of work and selflessly cared for the elderly.
Even though Eleanor was an extremely hard-working mother, she always ensured that her children’s birthday cakes were topped with her signature fluffy frosting, at least an inch thick. Summer afternoons in Salmo were always spent canning peaches, cherries, pickles and jams. Her soups were second to none, and she shared her cooking secrets with her son-in-law, Brett.
Eleanor took great pleasure in spending time and playing with her grandchildren, Logan, Lucas, Priya and Kaitlyn. When giggling ensued, it often progressed to full on chuckles with the hint of happy tears.
Mom, your hugs were ‘squeezes’ and were very comforting in strength and feeling. Although they will be dearly missed, we will continue to honor your memory by living our lives to the fullest.
A memorial gathering will be hosted on Friday, July 23, 2021 at Park Memorial, 9709 – 111 Ave NW, Edmonton, from 5 – 8 p.m. Words of remembrance will be held at 6 p.m.
