Dr. Joseph Samuel Litner
1945 – 2021
It is with profound sadness that family and friends mourn the passing of Dr. Joseph Samuel Litner, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.E.P., at his home in Dupont, WA on May 15, 2021 after a lengthy, painful and heroic battle with liver cancer. Born and raised in Montreal, he was the son of the late David Litner, Q.C. and the late Sylvia Litner and is survived by his wife and partner of more than forty years, Maria Hugi, M.D., his two sons, David and Jonathan, and his sister Dr. Bluma Litner (Mark Rosenstein).
As an ER physician, Joe taught and mentored countless medical students, interns and residents and won widespread recognition and awards for his commitment and service, such as:
The Achievement Medal for Civilian Service – “For exceptionally meritorious service while serving as a medical officer in the Department of Emergency Medicine”, Madigan Army Medical Center, U.S. Army, WA USA.
The Charity Hospital (New Orleans) Hurricane Katrina Award: “In recognition of you selfless and courageous commitment to humanity in the face of relentless adversity. You are an inspiration to mankind”.
University of Washington, Department of Emergency Medicine, Madigan Army Medical Center-Teacher of the Year.
Joe was blessed with a brilliant mind, an insatiable thirst for knowledge and a wide variety of interests, including history, politics, sports and scientific literature. He relished engaging in online debates on the issues of the day with a host of people with very disparate views, and he was a highly sought-after expert witness in medical malpractice trials across North America.
He was kind, loyal and generous to a fault and an outrageously funny raconteur with a larger -than-life personality who filled the room. He loved his Whistler chalet and downhill skiing with his family, great food, the Seattle Seahawks, the Seattle Mariners, travel with Maria and time spent with his Newfoundland dogs Solomon, Samson and his St Bernard dog Moses. Above all, he was devoted to his family, friends and patients. A life well lived.
Donations in memory of Joe can be made to Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (INFO@MONTREAL.CHW.CA) Tel: (514) 933-8461
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Dr Joseph Samuel Litner 2021..
