Dr. Donald’s Obituary
Dr. Donald Joseph MacIntosh, MD FRCPC FACP ACCP, 96, Halifax, died Tuesday, July 27, 2021, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
He was born on November 16th, 1924, in North Battleford, Sask. and moved to Pictou County, at a young age. He was predeceased by his parents Alexander Donald and Viola (McManus) MacIntosh, and his wife, Nadia (Chatelain).
He is survived by his daughters, Nadia Mary (Max) Gold, Catherine Anne MacIntosh and Elizabeth Viola (Frank) MacKinnon; and grandchildren, Heather Elizabeth (Mark Ruggle) MacKinnon, Nadia Rose (Joshua Cairns) MacKinnon and Graeme Alexander (Natalie Helm) MacKinnon; great-grandchildren, Emily, and Liam; his sister, Sister Mary MacIntosh.
Donald graduated with a BA from St. Francis University in 1943 and MD from McGill University in 1947. After postgraduate studies in Internal Medicine and Respirology in Montreal, Donald spent a year as a Research Fellow at the Trudeau Sanatorium in Saranac Lake, New York in 1951-52. It was there he met his wife, Nadia. They were married in 1953 in Montreal and Donald began practicing at the Montreal General and teaching at McGill.
Donald advanced to Director of the Cardiorespiratory Laboratory at the Montreal General and in 1967 became the Head of the newly created Respiratory Division. He also served as Physician-in Chief at the Royal Edward Hospital from 1964 to 1978.
In 1978 Donald moved to Halifax, to practice and teach at Dalhousie University. He went on to become Chief of Medicine at the Camphill Hospital from 1980 to 1982 and Chief of Respirology at the Victoria General Hospital from 1982 to 1995.
Donald was appointed Chairman of the Committee of Pulmonary Physiology, American College of Chest Physicians from 1974 to1976. He was the founding member and President of the Atlantic Thoracic Society from 1993 to 1996 and Head of the Nova Scotia Lung Association.
Donald served as President of the Halifax Canadian Club from 1994 to 1998 and Regional Vice President of the Canadian Club from 1997 to 1998.
Throughout his lifetime Donald especially enjoyed the pursuits of teaching and research as well as community volunteering. In his leisure time, he enjoyed reading, music, travel, gardening at his country home in Lismore as well as spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Arrangements are entrusted to P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Lismore with Father Colin F. MacKinnon presiding. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. If desired, donations may be made in memory of Donald to the Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation and Lung Association of Nova Scotia.
