Douglas Perley Ridgewell 2021

Douglas Perley Ridgewell
RIDGEWELL, Douglas Perley. On Wednesday, January 21st 2021, Douglas
(Doug) Perley Ridgewell, loving husband of Marlene Glover-Ridgewell,
passed away at the age of 82.
Born in Plaster Rock, NB, September 14, 1938, Doug was the second
child of Perley and Beth (MacLeod) Ridgewell. Throughout his life Doug
was enamored with sports and as a youth and young man excelled most
particularly in both baseball and hockey. He also took up the game of
golf, however a golfing friend introduced him to the sport of sailing
and he was hooked for life. Believing he couldn’t afford to buy
one, Doug built his first boat, later admitting that it probably cost
him more than the purchase price of the readymade item.
Originally trained as an automotive mechanic Doug soon moved from auto
bays to the fitting rooms of high-end men’s fashion retail
stores; he worked his way up to managing the Toronto flagship of a
national chain before moving to Halifax. There he was a part of the
House of Rodney before opening the first Ridgewell’s menswear in
1979. As an independent entrepreneur he held active membership in a
variety of business organizations, notably the BBB and CIFB. In
addition to the retail stores, Doug branched out to create Ridgewell
Contract Sales providing uniform clothing to local and national
companies, primarily but not exclusively to the Hospitality and
Transportation industries. The transition to internet business seemed
a logical model as business crossed into the new millennium.
As the love of sailing was ever a part of him, Doug was an active
member, sometimes flag officer in the Dartmouth Yacht Club, the St.
Margaret Sailing Club, the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron and the
Chester Yacht Club. Whether racing or cruising he was always happiest
on the water and better yet, behind the wheel. In the mid
2000’s he and wife Marlene of 25 years, decided to embrace the
dream of many a sailor to live on board and sail the warmer seas,
pursuing this dream kept them away for five, cold Canadian winters, it
was a slice of paradise.
The couple returned to living on land, settling in Gold River, on the
south shore of Nova Scotia . Re-establishing roots allowed him to
refocus on an active and dedicated duty to his church, a man of faith
he often and unknowingly inspired others. Previously serving at St.
Augustine’s, Jollimore and St. Peter’s, Birch Cove, he now
served in various capacities at St. Mary’s and Grace Anglican
Church in St. Martin’s Parish.
Doug was predeceased by his parents, Perley and Beth, his step-mother,
Alice and his older brother, George. He is survived by his wife,
Marlene of 38 years as well as nieces, Kim (Ridgewell) Duncan, Karen
(Ridgewell) Lauze and their families.
A memorial service is to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers
